disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a 14 certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy 15

That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John whom I beheaded he is risen from the dead. The king (at the instigation of Hero dias, and the request of her daughter) sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought; and he went and beheaded him in the prison, And brought his head in a charger and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. Mar. vi. 14, 15, 16. 27, 28. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers. Ac. vii. 52.

Likewise shall also the Son of man.] See chap. xvi. 21. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. We hid as it were our faces from him. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Is. liii. 3-12. Him (Christ) being delivered, by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Ac. ii. 23. Ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; and killed the Prince of Life whom God hath raised from the dead,

whereof we are witnesses. Ac. iii. 14, 15. Be it known unto you all (said Peter), and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him, doth this man stand here before you whole. c. iv. 10.

13 The disciples understood.] See chap. xi. 14.

14 When they were come, &c.] When he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the Scribes questioning with them. Mar. ix. 14. &c. And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him, &c. Lu. ix. 37, &c.

Kneeling down.] There came a leper to him, beseeching him and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt thou canst make me clean. Mar. i. 40. When he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Mar. x. 17. And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him ; but Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; myself also am a man. Ac. x. 25, 26.

I

15 Have mercy on my son.] See chap. ix. 27.; xv. 22. Behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and when he saw him he fell at his feet; and besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death; I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed, and she shall live. Mar. v. 22, 23. If thou canst do any thing (said the father of him who had the dumb and deaf spirit), have compassion on us, and help us. Mar. ix. 22. Master, I beseech thee (said the father of the demoniac), look upon my son, for he is mine only child; And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out, and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly, departeth from him. And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. And Jesus answering, said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. Lu. ix. 38-42. Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum; When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and

on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for oft-times he 16 falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him 17 to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long

besought him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. John iv. 46, 47.

For he is lunatick.] See chap. iv. 24. Master (said one of the multitude), I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away; and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not. And they brought him unto "him" ("Jesus"), and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming. And he asked his father, How long is ago since this And he said, Of a child; and oft-times it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him; but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Mar. ix. 17, 18. 20, 21, 22.

came unto him?

For oft-times he falleth, &c.] See chap. viii. 31, 32. Hast not thou made an hedge about "him" ("Job," said Satan to the Lord), and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house and there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burnt up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away; yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house; and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men and they are dead;

and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. Job i. 10-19. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils, from the sole of his foot unto his crown. Job ii. 7. He (that had the legion) had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces, neither could any man tame him; and always, night and day, he was in the tombs, crying and cutting him. self with stones. Mar. v. 4, 5.

16 And they could not cure him.] See ver. 19, 20. He (Elisha) said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way; if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again; and lay my staff upon the face of “the child" ("the son" of the Shunammite woman, who had died). And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy sou! liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose and followed her; and Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing: wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 2 Ki. iv. 29, 30, 31. I besought thy disciples (said the father of the demoniac) to cast him out, and they could not. L. ix. 40. His (Jesus') name (said Peter) through faith in his name, hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Ac. iii. 16. Jesus I know, and Paul I know (said the evil spirit to the sons of Sceva), but who are ye? And the man, in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fied out of that house naked and wounded. Ac. xix. 15, 16.

17 O faithless and perverse generation] See chap. vi. 30.; viii. 26.; xiii. 58. ; xvi. & When they (the disciples) heard that he (Jesus) was alive, and had been seen of her (Mary Magdalene), believed not. Mar. xvi. 11. O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Lu. xxiv. 25. Thomas, reach hither thy finger (said Jesus), and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side, and be not faithless but believing. John xx. 27. Some, when they had heard, did provoke; howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses, but with whom was he (the Lord) grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed 18 out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, 'Why could not 19 we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your 20 unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of

So we see they could not enter in because of oftentimes it had caught him, and he was unbelief. He. iii. 16-19.

How long shall I be with you?] And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? Let my people go that they may serve me. Ex. x. 3. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? Ex. xvi. 28. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? And how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. Nu. xiv. 11. 27. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways. Ps. xcv. 10. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Pr. i. 22. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Pr. vi. 9. O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved; how long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Jer. iv. 14. About the time of forty years (said Paul) suffered he their manners in the wilderness. Ac. xiii. 18.

18 Rebuked the devil.] See chap. xii. 22. He cast out many devils, and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. Mar. i. 34. Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit (said Jesus to him that had the legion). Mar. v. 8. He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. Mar. ix. 25. Jesus rebuked him (the spirit of an unclean devil), saying, Hold thy peace and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this? for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And devils also came out of many, crying out and saying, Thou art the Christ, the Son of God. And he rebuking them, suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ. Lu. iv. 35, 36. 41. He had commanded the unclean spirit (Legion) to come out of the man; for

kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness. Lu. viii. 29. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit (of the demoniac), and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. Lu. ix. 42. Paul being grieved (that the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination cried after him and his company), turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. Ac. xvi. 18. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? Ac. xix. 13, 14, 15.

From that very hour.] See chap. ix. 22.; xv. 28. Then inquired "he" ("the nobleman") of "them" (" his servants") the hour when "he" ("his son") began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed and his whole house. John iv. 52, 53.

19 Came the disciples to Jesus apart.] And when he was alone they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. And he said unto them, Unto "you" ("his disciples") it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. Mar. iv. 11. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? Mar. ix. 28.

20 Because of your unbelief.] See verse 17. and chap. xiv. 30, 31. So we see that "they" ("the Israelites") could not enter in (to his rest) because of unbelief. He. iii. 19.

If ye have faith.] If ye have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig-tree (which withered away), but also if ye shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. Mat. xxi. 21. Have faith in God; For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to. pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith.

mustard-seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impos21 sible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer 22 and fasting. And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto

them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again.

Mar. xi. 22, 23. If ye had faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye might say unto this sycaminetree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. Lu. xvii. 6. To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit. 1 Co. xii. 8, 9. Though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 1 Co. xiii. 2. See chap. xxi. 21.

A grain of mustard-seed.] See chap. xiii. 21. "It" ("the kingdom of God") is like a grain of mustard-seed, which, when it is sown in the earth is less than all seeds that be in the earth, but when it is sown, it groweth up, and becomes greater than all herbs. Mar. iv. 31.

Nothing shall be impossible.] If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mar. ix. 23. And "she" ("Anna the prophetess") was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers, night and day. Lu. ii. 37. The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Lu. xviii. 27.

21 This kind goeth not out, &c.] See chap. xii. 45.

But by prayer and fasting.] And he (Elijah) stretched himself upon the child (the son of the widow of Zarephath) three times, and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 1 Ki. xvii. 21, 22. And I set my face unto the Lord God (said Daniel), to seek by prayer, and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes, and I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession. Da. ix. 3. 4. This kind (of evil spirit) can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting. Mar. ix. 29. As "they" ("the prophets and teachers which were of the church at Antioch") ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. c. xiii. 2, 3. When they had ordained them elders in every

church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. Ac. xiv. 23. Defraud ye not one the other (husband and wife), except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. 1 Co. vii. 5. A night and a day I have been in the deep (said Paul), in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. 2 Co. xi. 27. Take the helmet of salvation, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for ail saints. Ep. vi. 18.

22 The Son of man shall be betrayed, &c.] See chap. xvi. 21. Mar. viii. 31. Then (at the coming of the Son of man) shall many be of fended, and shall betray one another, and hate one another. Mat. xxiv. 10. From that time he (Judas) sought opportunity to betray him. Rise (said Jesus), let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. Mat. xxvi. 16. 46. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers. Ac. vii. 52. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed took bread, &c. &c. 1 Co. xi. 23.

They

23 They shall kill him.] My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me, the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me. They pierced my hands and my feet; I may tell all my bones. look, and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O Lord. O my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword, my darling from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth; for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ps. xxii. 15-22. &c. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth; Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief. When thou shalt make his soul an offering

And they were exceeding sorry. And when they were come to 24 Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And 25 when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then 26 are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend 27

for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he hath poured out his soul unto death. And he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Is. liii. 7. 10, 11, 12. After threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself. Da. ix. 26. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Zec. xiii. 7.

The third day he shall be raised again.] Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Ps. xvi. 10. Destroy this temple (said Christ), and in three days I will raise it up. John ii. 19. "Him" ("Christ") being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain, whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Therefore (David) being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; he seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. Ac. ii. 23-31. I delivered unto you, first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures. 1 Co. xv. 3, 4.

And they were exceeding sorry.] Because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart; Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is expedient for you that I go away. Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice. And ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. Ye now have sor

row, but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. John xvi. 6. 20. 22.

24 When they were come to Capernaum.] He came to Capernaum, and being in the house, he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? Mar. ix. 33.

Tribute money.] This they shall give (as a ransom of souls), every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs): an half shekel shall be the offering of the Lord. Ex. xxx. 13. A bekah for . every man; that is half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old, and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand, and five hundred and fifty men, Ex. xxxviii. 26.

Render unto

25 Yes.] See chap. iii. 15. Cesar the things which are Cesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Mat. xxii. 21. For this cause pay ye tribute also, for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Ro. xiii. 6, 7.

Of their own children, or of strangers?] And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man (Goliath) that is come up? Surely to defy Israel is he come up. And it shall be that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. 1 Sa. xvii. 25.

27 Lest we should offend.] See chap. xv. 12, 13, 14. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Ro. xiv. 21. We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour, for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself, but as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. Ro. xv. 1, 2, 3. Take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak. Wherefore if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Co. viii. 9. 13. Though I be free
