Phil. i. 19, 20, 21. I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Ti. iv. 6, 7, 8. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Re. ii. 10.

me.

40 That receiveth me.] Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. Mat. xviii. 5. Verily I say unto you (says the King in the last day to those on the right hand), inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (And to those on his left hand), inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Mat. xxv. 40. 45. Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me, and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me; for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. Lu. ix. 48. He that heareth you heareth me, and he that despiseth you despiseth me, and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me. Lu. x. 16. He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. John xiii. 20. Jesus said to them (his disciples) again, Peace be unto you, as my Father hath sent me even so send I you. John xx. 21. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead be ye reconciled to God. 2 Co. v. 20. My temptation which was in my flesh, ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. Ga. iv. 14. He therefore that despiseth, 1 despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. 1 The. iv. 8.

And he that receiveth me, &c.] All men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father; he that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 23. He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me ; I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me, should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth

him. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself, but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment what I should say, and what I should speak. John xii. 44-49. God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phi. ii. 9, 10, 11. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is anti-christ that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father (but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also). 1 John ii. 22, 23. Whosoever transgresseth and

abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth, in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 2 John 9.

41 That receiveth a prophet.] Restore the man his wife (said God to Abimelech), for he is a prophet, and he (Abraham) shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live. Ge. xx. 7. Arise, get thee (said the Lord to Elijah) to Zarephath which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. So he arose, and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks; and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse; and behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said. But make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee, and for thy son. For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 1 Ki. xvii. 9-15. And he (when her son's sickness was so sore that there was no breath left in him) took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed; and he cried unto the Lord and said, O Lord my God, hast

phet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name 42 of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son? And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord, my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again; and he revived. And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother. And Elijah said, See, thy son liveth, And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth. 1 Ki. xvii. 19-24. And Ahab (king of Israel) called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly for it was so when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 1 Ki. xviii. 3, 4. It fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold, now I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick, and it shall be when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. And he (Elisha) said (unto her, knowing she had no child), About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. And when Elisha was come into the house (some time after), behold, the child was dead and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. And he went up and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and he stretched himself upon the child, and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro, and went up, and stretched himself upon him; and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened

his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out. 2 Ki. iv. 8, 9, 10. 16, 17. 32-37. And when she (Lydia) was baptized (of Paul), and her houshold, she be sought us, saying,

If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there, and she constrained us. Ac. xvi. 15. I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the Church which is at Cenchrea, that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you, for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus : who have for my life laid down their own necks; unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Gaius mine host, and of the whole Church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother. Ro. xvi. 1-4. 23. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesi phorus, for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: but when he was in Rome he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day; and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus thou knowest very well. 2 Ti. i. 16, 17, 18. God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, în that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister, He. vi. 10. Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers, which have borne witness of thy charity before the Church, whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well; because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We, therefore, ought to receive such, that we might be fellow helpers to the truth. 3 John v. 6, 7, 8.

A righteous man's reward.] See chap. vi. 4. 6. 18. and xvi. 27. The Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Mat. xvi. 27. Then (in the last day) shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in. Naked and ye clothed me; I was sick and ye visited me; I was in prison and ye came unto me. shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick or in prison and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have

whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 34-40. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Is. iii. 10. When thou makest a feast call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Lu. xiv. 13, 14. If I do "this thing" ("preach the Gospel") willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, a dispensation of the Gospel is committed unto me. 1 Co. ix. 17. Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. 2 The. i. 6, 7. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 2 John i. 8.

42 One of these little ones.] See chap. viii. 5, 6. Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name, ceiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Mat. xviij. 3. 5, 6. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. Mat. xviii. 10. 14. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 40. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts; smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered, and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Zec. xiii. 7. Whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. Mar. ix. 42. It is impossible but that offences will come; but woe unto him through whom they come: it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Lu. xvii. 1, 2. If any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols? And through thy

knowledge shall the weak brother perish for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. Wherefore, if meat make my brother offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Co. viii. 10-13.

A cup of cold water.] Whosoever shall give you (Christ's disciples) a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, He shall not lose his reward. Mar. ix. 41. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in (to the treasury) two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury. Mar. xii. 42. 43. Ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good; but me ye have not always; she (the woman who anointed Jesus' feet) hath done what she could; she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Mar. xiv. 7, 8. If there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 2 Co. viii. 12.

He shall in no wise lose his reward.] So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul; when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off. Pr. xxiv. 14. Love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest; for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Lu. vi. 35. He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity, for God loveth a cheerful giver; and God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor; his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God; whiles by the experiment of this ministration, they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the Gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; and by their prayer for you, which long after

you for the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. 2 Co. ix. 6-15. Now, ye Philippians, know also, that in the beginning of the Gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no Church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift; but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound. I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Phi. iv. 15-19. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. He. vi. 10.

CHAP. XI.-1 Commanding his twelve disciples.] Go ye therefore (as all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth), and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. xxviii. 19, 20. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. This is my commandment, that ye love one another as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends; ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. John xv. 10. 12, 13, 14. The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach. Ac. i. 1. He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the judge of quick and dead. Ac. x. 42. Ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. 1 The. iv. 2. Now we command you brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. Even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 2 The. iii. 6. 10. I give thee charge in the sight of God, that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until

the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Ti. vi. 14.

He departed thence.] See chap. iv. 23, 24. and ix. 35. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. lxi. 1, 2, 3. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath-day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias; and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it is written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. iv. 15-21. And he (Jesus), went throughout every city, and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him. Lu. viii. 1. Who (Jesus) went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. Ac. x. 38.

2 When John had heard in the prism.] And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things (the works of Jesus). And John calling unto him two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another? And in the same hour he cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits, and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering, said unto them, Go your

way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard: how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me. Lu. vii. 18-23.

In the prison.] See chap. iv. 12; xvii. 12. And Jesus answering, spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath-day? Lu. xiv. 3. Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her, Mar. vi. 17. Herod the tetrarch being reproved by him, for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. Lu. iii. 19, 20. John was not yet (when Jesus and his disciples came into Judea) cast into prison (but was baptizing in Enon). John iii. 24.

He sent two of his disciples.] See chap. ix. 14. There arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him. John answered and said, A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven. Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. John iii. 25-28. While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Ac. xix. 1—3.

3 Art thou he that should come ?] See chap. ii. 2-6. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed (Christ) cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: hosanna in the highest. Mat. xxi. 9. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman (said God to the serpent), and between thy seed, and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 15. In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Ge. xii. 3. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. I shall see him, but not now; I shall behold him, but not nigh. There shall come a star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners

of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. Nu. xxiv. 17. The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words, which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. De. xviii. 15. 19. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion, I will declare the decree. The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings, be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling; kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 6-12. The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The Lord hath sworn and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. Ps. cx. 1-5.. The Lord himself shall give you asign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Is. vii. 14. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely, and this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord our Righteousness. Therefore, behold the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liveth which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but the Lord liveth which brought up, and which led the seed of the house of Israel, out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them, and they shall dwell in their own land. Je. xxiii. 6—8. I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them: I the Lord have spoken it. And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land; and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Ex. xxxiv. 24-25. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in
