10. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

II. These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death; but they thought that he spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

EVENING LESSON-ISA, 66: 10-24

PRAYER FOR WEDNESDAY AFTER ASCENSION Dear Lord and Master, how kind Thou art to us in sparing our unprofitable lives, and keeping us through trials and difficulties, and dost not suffer us to be overcome, or overthrown. How many are Thy mercies and how great Thy love!

We come to Thee in the morning before the cares and responsibilities of the day crowd in upon us. We come because we feel the need of Thy presence and help. We cannot live without Thee, and, dear Lord, we would not. There is more joy and real satisfaction in Thy service and worship, than in all the service and pleasures of the world. Come into our hearts by Thy Spirit and fill us with Thyself.

We ask not to be filled with Thy Spirit for our own comfort, but for service; that we may be a blessing to others. Show us what we can do to benefit our fellow-men. Give us influence among men, that we may win them to Thee. Hear us in behalf of all the troubled to-day, of the tempted and tried, of all who are in need and distress. Pour out Thy Holy Spirit upon all flesh and hasten the time when all shall know Thee, from the least to the greatest, for Thy dear Name's sake. Amen.

THURSDAY AFTER ASCENSION

MORNING LESSON-JOHN 11: 14-28

14. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 15. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19. And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27. She said unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

28. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

EVENING LESSON-JER. 46: 13-28.

PRAYER FOR THURSDAY AFTER ASCENSION Merciful God, our Father, in Whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, we come to Thee in fullest confidence, knowing that Thou wilt do what is best; that Thou wilt withhold even what we ask, if it be contrary to Thy will, and would prove a hindrance to our souls. We have no will but Thine. Deny us, Lord, our choicest petitions, if it would be better for us not to have them.

We thank Thee for the sweet light of the morning. Help us to prize all our blessings that come from Thee. May their commonness not make them seem ordinary. Each day is new and fresh from Thy hand.

We pray that all the world may be brought to know Thee. Hasten the coming of Thy kingdom. May the heathen soon be given to Thee, and the uttermost parts of the earth for Thy possession. May sinners be converted unto Thee. Pour out Thy Spirit upon the

whole Church of Christ, and upon individual hearts. Make all our homes godly homes. Make our own home a place holy, because of Thy presence and peace. Hear this, our prayer, we ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

FRIDAY AFTER ASCENSION

MORNING LESSON-JOHN 11:32-44

32. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

34. And said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

35. Jesus wept.

36. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

37. And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

EVENING LESSON-ISA. 33:9-20.

PRAYER FOR FRIDAY AFTER ASCENSION Thou gracious and adorable God, who art from everlasting to everlasting the same, to Thee we come in the morning, to give thanks, and praise, for the love that has redeemed us, and the mercy that has spared us, and the opportunities Thou hast given us.

We

thank Thee for another day in which to serve Thee. Abide with us this day, and all our days. Keep us that we sin not against Thee. Hold up all our goings in Thy paths.

We thank Thee that our lot has been cast in a Christian land, where we can know Thee and worship Thee without fear or disturbance. May all lands speedily become Christian. Raise up missionaries from our homes and churches to carry the Gospel to the heathen. Bring Thine own chosen people into the kingdom. Oh, hasten the fullness of times when they too, shall recognize Christ as their Saviour, for His dear Name's sake. Amen.

SATURDAY AFTER ASCENSION

MORNING LESSON-JOHN II:47-57

47. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

48. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him; and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

50. Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish

not.

51. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; 52. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

53. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

54. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

55. And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

56. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

57. Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

EVENING LESSON-ISA. 57:13-21

PRAYER FOR SATURDAY AFTER ASCENSION

Merciful and gracious art Thou, O Lord God our Father, more patient than a mother is with her child: more just than the most righteous ruler on earth. Look upon us this morning, as we approach Thee in prayer. Give unto us the mind of the Spirit, that we may ask of Thee the things we ought to have. Lord, Thou knowest our many needs, and hearest our much asking. Keep us from asking amiss. Withhold from us, even what we ask, if it be contrary to Thy will.

Send Thy Holy Spirit upon all men! Upon Thy church universal. Give to Thy servants power to preach Thy word on the coming Sabbath. Preserve Thy Church from all error, and schism, and make her clean, without spot or blemish or any such thing.

Wilt Thou remember all who are in need or distress this day. Those who are carrying heavy burdens, or into whose hearts a great sorrow has come. Let the sunlight of Thy love radiate every darkened home, and shadowed heart. All these blessings, and all else we need, we ask in the name of our blessed Lord. Amen.

WHITSUNDAY

MORNING LESSON-ACTS 2:1-21

1. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utter

ance.

5. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

12. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

13. Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. 14. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his
