Title 40—PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT is composed of fourteen volumes. The parts in these volumes are arranged in the following order: Parts 1-51, Part 52, Parts 53-60, Parts 61-80, Parts 81-85, Parts 86-99, Parts 100–149, Parts 150-189, Parts 190-299, Parts 300-399, Parts 400-424, Parts 425-699, Parts 700-789 and Part 790 to End. A derivation table appears in the volume containing Parts 1-51. The contents of these volumes represent all current regulations codified under this title of the CFR as of July 1, 1989.

Chapter I-Environmental Protection Agency appears in all fourteen volumes. A Pesticide Tolerance Commodity/Chemical Index appears in Parts 150-189. A Toxic Substances Chemical-CAS Number Index appears in Parts 700-789 and Part 790 to End. Distribution Tables appear in the volumes containing Parts 100-149 and Parts 190-299. Redesignation Tables appear in the volumes containing Parts 1-51, Parts 81-85, Parts 86-99, Parts 150-189, Parts 700-789 and Part 790 to End. Regulations issued by the Council on Environmental Quality appear in the volume containing Part 790 to End.
