well-fpent life with Joy and Comfort, and may meet death without fear.

[ocr errors]

Look upon me, O most gracious God, when the time of my diffolution draws nigh, as a reconciled Father in Chrift Jefus. Speak peace unto my confcience, and fay unto my Soul, "I am the God of thy Salvation." Let not the cruel Enemy of Souls affrighten me with his terrors; but give thy holy Angels charge over me, to keep me out of his hands, and let the comforts of thy holy Spirit cheer and refresh my Soul, in its paffage through this Vale of tears and mifery to a happy Eternity.

O Lord! leave me not to myfelf in that time of diftrefs, when I fhall stand so much in need of thee... Confirm my faith; fupport me in my dying agonies; and forfake me not when my ftrength faileth. Let thy merciful Ears, O God, be then open to my prayers; and spare me, O

Lord

most holy, O God moft mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, thou moft worthy Judge eternal! fuffer me not at my last hour, through any pains of body, or weakness of mind, to renounce my dependence upon thee. But grant, O merciful Father, that, with an humble reliance on thy mercies, and the infinite merits of my dear Redeemer, and with an entire fubmiffion to thy bleffed will, I may cheerfully refign up my Soul into thy hands, and may be willing and even defirous to leave this world, when thou, my God, in thy great wisdom, fhalt fee it fitting.

O Lord! let me never be feparated from thee: but grant that my Soul may be fo united to thee, who art the fullness of all Happiness, by the strongest ties of Faith, Love, and Obedience; that after a Life fpent here in thy Service, I may dwell with thee in Life everlafting, and be received into thofe mansions of eternal blifs and glory, which

thou

thou haft prepared for them that truly love and fear thee; through the merits and for the fake, of thy beloved Son, Jefus Chrift, our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

A Prayer for condemned Criminals, by Bishop Wilfon.

God whofe Judgments againft all obftinate offenders are moft fevere and terrible, and whofe mercies are infinite towards all thofe who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto Thee; look down we beseech Thee with an Eye of pity on thefe perfons now lying under the Sentence of Death ready to be executed upon them.

In the midft of Judgment, remember mercy, and let thy power and tender compaffion be fhewed in their converfion, as thy Juftice has appeared in their condemnation. Give them a true Sense of all the tranfgreffions of their lives paft,

and

and especially of those fins that have brought this Judgment upon them; that their confciences being awakened by the near approach of Death, they may call their ways to remembrance, and turn to Thee in weeping, fafting, and praying. And the gracious God be merciful unto them in the free pardon of all their Sins !

Bleffed God, and lover of Souls, let the forrowful fighing of the pri foners come before Thee, and by the greatness of thy power preserve Thou those that are appointed to die. We know, O Lord, that there is no word impoffible with Thee, and that it is not always much time and knowledge, but thy Grace, which fits men for Heaven, which we humbly pray Thee to vouchsafe to these thy poor creatures, who have no hopes but in thy great mercy in Jefus Chrift; for whose fake we pray God to hear us; and at the hour of death and in the day of Judgment, good Lord deliver us.

And fanctify we mofl humbly befeech Thee, these Examples to this whole land, that we may all fee that it is indeed an evil thing and bitter to forfake the Lord; and that we may teach our Children and our Households, to fear God always; that they may continue thine ever until they come to thine everlafting Kingdom, through Jefus Chrift our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

The perfons for whom the above prayer was intended being condemned for Burglary and Robbery, the Bishop added an Exhortation which is here abridged.

AND now we have charitably offered up our prayers to God

in behalf of these poor prifoners, it will be a proper time to fpeak of the crime for which they are to fuffer death. And it is a matter ferioufly to be lamented by this generation that the Vice of Stealing is now be
