the Shame and Anguifh, the horror and confufion of a guilty confcience; and give me that comfort and complacency of mind, which arifes from the consciousness of having been faithful in thy Service, and obedient to thy will. And, fince thou hast been gracioufly pleafed to make thy Service the moft perfect freedom, and the practice of our duty fo conducive to our prefent as well as future well-being; O make me steadfast and immovable in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments; that, having faithfully ferved thee in this life, I may at laft be found meet to be a partaker of the Inheritance of the Saints in light, through the fole Merits and Interceffion of our eternal Advocate and Mediator, Jefus Chrift. Amen.

¶ A Prayer for the diftreffed, &c.

WHILE I thus

pray

for my

felf, fuffer me, O gracious
Lord,

Lord, to offer up my fervent fupplications for fuch of my fellow creatures, as may at this moment be in want of thy fatherly protection. Have mercy upon all thofe who never pray for themfelves, but without the Knowledge of thee, my God, plunder and perfecute thofe whom thou haft made. Support and comfort the unhappy and diftreffed, wherever they may be found; wipe away their tears, and pour balm into their hearts. Relieve all that are troubled in mind or confcience; all that are in danger of falling into defpair; all that are in any dangerous Error; all that, like myfelf, are in prifon and adverfity; all that are in Slavery or in Exile; all that are perfecuted for righteoufnefs' fake-give them grace to improve under their fufferings, and grant them an happy Iffue out of all their afflictions.

Lord, fanctify the miferies of this Life, and in particular the punifh

ments

'ments of thofe, who have fallen into the hands of Juftice for their of fences; fanctify them, I pray thee, to the everlafting benefit of those that fuffer. Give unto all Sinners fuch a fenfe of thy difpleasure, that they may flee from Sin, as from the face of a Serpent, and lofe no time in regaining thy favor and Salvation.

Blefs our gracious Sovereign, and all the Magiftrates of this realm; remove from my heart, all refentment against thofe, that have brought me to this place, or fentenced me to this folitary Imprifonment; and make me fenfible, that this bodily constraint is well calculated to bring me to a knowledge of myself, that I may not be given over to everlafting punishment in the day of univerfal recompenfe.

For thus flopping me in the midft of my Sins, I blefs and praife thy holy name. Grant that I may daily be more firmly fettled in the belief of thy holy word, and in that most

com

comfortable doctrine for distressed Sinners, the propitiatory Sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jefus Chrift; into whofe hands I refign myself, my Soul and body, for thou haft redeemed me, O Lord thou God of Truth. Amen.

A Prayer for imprisoned Debtors.

Almighty God, who lookeft down upon all the Sons of men with mercy and pity, I befeech thee to accept the prayers of me thy Servant, who am now feparated from Society, and weighed down with Sorrow and Affliction. The debt which I owe to thee has increa fed to a great fize; give me thy Grace to difcharge it in the belt manner I am able. Yet it is not in me, O Lord, to offer any equal return for thy Mercy; daily have been my offences, and imperfect my

re

repentance. Let me, then, lay before thee the merits of my Saviour, who came purpofely into the world, that he might fave finners. Through him I fupplicate the pardon of my Sins-for there is none other name, given among men, whereby we can be faved.

If I have offended against my neighbours by ignorance, carelefsnefs, or defign, O blot out my tranfgreffions, and deliver me from eternal punishment. Give me an opportunity, by my future diligence, and more intenfe application to that Business and Employment, which thou haft allotted me in life, of making up for any y loffes or diftreffes I may have brought upon them; and let thy good Spirit turn their hearts to pity, to forgive, and to relieve me. And if any fhall have behaved towards me with unneceffary feverity and rigour, beflow upon me fuch a portion of Chriftian benevolence, as to forgive them
