The objections made by Lord Kames to Dr Smith's Theory of Sympathy, were previously communicated by the former to his friend Dr Reid of Glasgow, who thus expressed his opinion of them:

"I have always thought Dr S's system of Sympathy wrong. It is "indeed only a refinement of the selfish system; and I think your arguments against it solid.
