of men; a man of forrows, and acquainted with grief and we hid, as it were, our faces from him; he was defpifed, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our forrows; yet, we did esteem him ftricken, fmitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our tranfgreffions; he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his ftripes we are healed. And we, like fheep, have gone aftray; we have turned every one to his own way and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppreffed, and he was afflicted, yet, he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the flaughter, and as a fheep before her fhearers is dumb; fo opened not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who fhall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living for the tranfgreffion of my people was he ftricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief; when thou shalt make his foul an offering for fin, he fhall fee his feed, he fhall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord fhall profper in his hands. He shall fee of the travel of his foul, and fhall be fatisfied: by his knowledge fhall my righteous fervant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. poured out his foul unto death: and he was numbered with the tranfgreffors; and he bear the fin of many, and made interceffion for the tranfgreffors."

Mofes. Conviction captivates my mind; I acknowledge myself vanquifhed, and that Jefus is the Meffiah; a new fcene is prefented to the eyes of my foul, which enlightens my underftanding and fills my heart with grief for living a life oppofite to my God, who hath believed our report, Ifrael's difavowal, cenfuring and rejection, of the report of Jefus Chrift, agrees with this prophefy.

Boy. Mark 15. "And ftraightway in the morning the chief Priefts holding a confultation with the antients and the fcribes, and the whole council, bound Jefus and led him away to Pilate, and Pilate afked him, "Art thou the King of the Jews?" Jefus answering, faith to him: "Thou fayeft it." And the chief Priefts accufed him in many things. And Pilate asked him, faying: "Anfwereft thou nothing? behold in how many things they accuse you." But Jefus ftill answered nothing; fo that Pilate wondered. Now on the festival day he was wont to release unto them one of the prifoners, whomfoever they demanded. And there was one called Barabbas, who was in prison with fome feditious men, who in the fedition had committed murder. And when the multitude was come up, they began to defire that he would do as he had ever done to them. And Pilate answered them, and faid: "Will you, that I release to you the King of the Jews?" for he knew that the chief

priests had delivered him up through envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he fhould rather release Barrabbas to them. And Pilate again answered, faying to them: "What will you then that I do to the King of the Jews? But they again cried out crucify him. And Pilate faith to them: "Why, what evil hath he done?" But they cried out the more, "Crucify him." So Pilate being willing to fatisfy the people, releafed them Barabbas, and delivered up Jefus when he had fcourged him, to be crucified. And the foldiers led him into the court of the palace, and they call together the whole band and they cloath him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it on him, and they began to falute him: Hail, King of the Jews. And they ftruck his head with a reed; and they did fpit on him, and bowing their knees they worshipped him. And after they had mocked him they took off the purple from him, and put his own garments on him, and they led him out to crucify him. And they forced Simon, a Cyrinian who paffed by coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to take up his cross. And bringing him unto the place called Golgotha, which being interpreted, is, "The place of Calvary." And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh; but he took it not. And crucifying him, they divided his garments, cafting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucifyed him. And the infcription of his caufe was written over, "The King of the Jews." And with him they crucified two thieves,

thieves, the one on his right hand, the other on his left. And the fcripture was fulfilled which faith: "With the wicked he was reputed. And they that paffed by, blafphemed him, wagging their heads, and faying: Vah, thou that deftroyeft the Temple of God, and in three days. buildeft it up again: fave thyfelf, come down from the crofs." In like manner alfo the chief priests with the fcribes, mocking, faid one to another," He faved others, himself he cannot fave. Let Chrift, the king of Ifrael, come down from the crofs, that we may fee and believe. And they that were crucified with him, reviled him. And when the fixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole earth until the ninth hour; and at the ninth hour Jefus cried out with a loud voice, faying: "Eloi, eloi, lamma fabacthani?" which is, being interpreted, "my God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me?" and fome of the ftanders by hearing, faid: " Behold, he calleth Elias." And one running and filling a fpung with vinegar, and putting it upon a reed, gave him to drink, faying: "Stay, let us fee if Elias will come to take him down. And Jefus having cried out with a loud voice, gave up the ghoft. And the veil of the Temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom. And the Centurion officer who ftood over against him, feeing, that crying out in this manner, he had given up the ghoft, faid: "Indeed this man was the Son of God."

Boy. Pfalm 22. My God, my God, why baft thou forfaken me? why art thou so far from help-. ing me, and from the words of my roaring? O my God I cry in the day time, but thou beareft not; and in the night feafon, and am not filent. But thou art boly, O thou that inhabiteft the praises of Ifrael. Our fathers trufied in thee: they trufted and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trufted in thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm and no man: a reproach of men, and difpifed of the people. All they that fee me, laugh me to fcorn; they Shoot out the lip; they shake the bead, Jaying, be trufted in God that he would deliver him; let bim deliver him, feeing be delighted in him. But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breast. I was caft on thee from the womb; thou art my God from my mother's belly. Be not far from me; for trouble is near: there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed: strong bulls of Bashan have befet me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My ftrength is dried up like a pot-herd; and my tongue cleaveih to the roof of my mouth: thou hast brought me into the jaws of death.
