abortive, to bring Calvin and his fchifmatical and heretical adherents to the unity of the church and chair of St. Peter, he found it neceffary, by the fword of the fpirit, to cut them off as an infected branch, and accordingly excommunicated them.

Mof. From whence, and who conferred that power or authority to Luther, or any of his pretended reformation? He was, and stands condemned this day, with his whole brood, or affociation. Their condemnation is the joint voice of the church and their general council, eftablished and authorifed by Jefus Chrift, who you confefs to be your Ghoft; therefore you affuredly ftand condemned by your God. You have agreed to try your right of fovereignty with me, and I decide as you have fet forth your cafe; decide on me also with candour.

Calv. I fhall faint and not be able to digeft my dinner, if I hold forth longer, I fill my ftomach with wind, and fhall die with the cholic.

Lurb. When, all things confidered, we cannot wonder after fo hard a conflict and fet-to yesterday with the male-fwines paunch, entrails and fo forth, &c. &c.

Mof. I bid adieu. A fecond part of the fame tune, a fhoulder of Brawn-faufages, bloodpuddings, mince-pies and a large peas-pudding, the leg boiled with cabbages, all for two glut tons, enough for a troop of French horfe. Well you may become two facks of greafe. Adieu.

THIRD

THIRD CONFERENCE.

Meffrs. Luther and Calvin to Rabbi Mofes, greeting.

WE are your debtors, and have all faith by

trial, that your admonitions are a fore knowledge of the prophetic fpirit, inherited from your ancestry, the old prophets; we admire the refemblance you bear to the prophet Micah, who prophecied and foretold the death of Ahab, king of Ifrael. When 400 falfe prophets favoured the king's defign, Micah with the voice of truth gainfaid them and foretold the king's death. He was what the world terms harfh, and ill-favour'd; you are the fame; but his harshness would have faved the king's life and reputation, had he followed his counfel; in like fort we fhould have been freed from the most cruel relapfe that ever mortal man fuftained, had we attended to your prophecy. About fix hours after your departure a most violent eruption broke forth from our upper and lower man, and manifefted itself in the unheard-of extortions this conflict, or ra ther hard fight or convulfions continued with moft violent agonies for the fpace of fix hours, when the ftorm abated, and a total weakness, feeblenefs, faintnefs and imbecility of the whole man fucceeded, and it was not but with great care and attention, taking proper medicines to fupport, keep up, fuftain, manage, fet free, by proper reftoratives, the manhood

to its original, vigorous, and refplendent ftate, we now are thankful and count the minutes until you will vouchfafe us to another conference, wherin we may farther, and with more fullnefs, expatiate and unfold our hearts and fentiments to each other. We venerate truth,, honefty, and candour, wherever we can find those bleffings, and thefe encomiums are due to none more than yourself.

We are, with due deference,

LUTHER and CALVIN.

Mofes to Mers. Luther and Calvin.

As it is your wish to have my farther thoughts on your fpiritual warfare, I will attend you to-morrow morning at ten precifely, touching your encomiums. They are loft on one that requires nothing, either praise or dispraife, what I am. I wish to be known to all. It is in vain to require from others what our deferts cannot merit.

I am your's,

MOSES.

Mof. What matter would you defire to explicate on?

Luth. & Calv. We would with to make our feparation from the church of Rome appear to you in the light it does to us, destitute of grace and falvation.

Mof. Many charges must be proved to justify your affertion.

Luth. & Caly. This we are ready to do.

Mof.

Mof. The fundamental proof required is to prove Jefus Chrift an impoftor.

Luth. & Calv. This is not neceffary.

Mof. Upon this principle the church of Rome ftands or falls.

Luth. & Calv. The church of Rome is idolatrous, hateful to God, and detefted by men. Mof. I know not what are the crimes laid to her charge, or what she is; but upon this principle fhe ftands or falls.

Luth. & Calv. To charge Jefus Chrift with impofture would be charging ourselves with the like infamy.

[ocr errors]

Mof. There is no alternative.

Luth. & Calv. This is a principle we cannot underftand, to charge the church of Rome with reprobation, Jefus Chrift must be an impoftor.

Mof. This is as clearly ftated as one and one makes two.

Luth. & Calv. We wish you would explain this mystery, at least it appears fo to us.

Mof. There can be no mystery in a matter that is as clear as the fun.

Luth. & Calv. We cannot fee it in the light you do.

Mof. There is none fo blind as he that will not fee.

Lath. & Calv. We fhould be glad to fee all things clearly.

Mof. Your falvation is the price, if Jefus Chrift is your God.

Lutb. & Calv. Neither the fcriptures or creeds mention the church of Rome.

Moj.

Mof. What do you understand by the church

of Rome?

Luth. & Calv. We understand it to be the Roman Catholic church, which has infected all christendom with its damnable doctrine, in which is no falvation.

Mof. You mean the church of christendom, that Jefus Chrift had established with his most folemn promifes.

Luth. & Calv. We mean all chriftendom being in league with the pope transformed herself from the holy catholic church to the church of Rome, or, in other words, the fynagogue of Satan for 1000 years, until Luther and Calvin reftored her to her priftine and pure ftate.

Mof. This is the principle or ground of the proteftant reformation.

Luth. & Calv. We have no other, nor claim any other upon which we wreft our church.

Mof. Upon the principle you have fet your reformed church, you have charged Jefus Chrift with impofture; fo that by this principle, that you have placed and established your church, you have expofed your foolishness and abfurdities. You pretend to prove Jefus Chrift and the fcriptures both falfe, and then to found your religion upon this falfehood. You muft, to appear, and as others, reasonable men, accufe yourfelves of this blafphemy, and restore to Jefus Chrift, if you think him your God, and the fcriptures the truth they are entitled to, and take what is your own falfehood and inconfiftency: You involve us in the fame inconfiftency with yourfelves, by giving the God
