[Press release of Friday, June 3, 1983]

HON. SAM M. GIBBONS, CHAIRMAN, SUBCOMMITTEE on Trade, Committee ON WAYS AND MEANS, U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ANNOUNCES HEARing RegardiNG BUY AMERICAN RESTRICTION IN FISCAL YEAR 1983 SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION ON PROCUREMENT OF CERTAIN AIRCRAFT

The Honorable Sam M. Gibbons (D.-Fla.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Trade of the Committee on Ways and Means, U.S. House of Representatives, today announced that the Subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing on Monday, June 13, 1983, on the policy position of the Department of Defense and its basis with respect to the Buy American restriction on procurement of replacement aircraft for the CT-39 aircraft contained in Title I, Chapter III, of H.R. 3069, Supplemental Appropriation for Fiscal Year 1983, passed by the House of Representatives on May 25, 1983. The provision is as follows:

"Funds available to the Department of Defense during the current fiscal year may not be obligated to acquire (by lease or purchase) a replacement aircraft for the CT-39 aircraft from other than a United States firm and such replacement aircraft must be assembled in the United States and utiltize an airframe manufactured in the United States."

Officials from the Department of Defense will be the sole witnesses.

The hearing will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the main Committee hearing room, 1100 Longworth House Office Building.

Chairman GIBBONS. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

This is an oversight hearing of the Subcommittee on Trade in which we are looking into a Buy American restriction in the supplemental appropriations bill for fiscal year 1983.

H.R. 3069 prohibits the use of funds by the Department of Defense to acquire CT-39 replacement aircraft from other than a U.S. firm.

Such aircraft must also be assembled in the United States and must utilize a U.S. airframe. The components, engines, and other parts may be supplied from foreign or U.S. sources.
