The

Ground control studies to back-up our longwall mining
demonstration projects and to provide the criteria for
applying longwall methods to other areas in the U.S.
scope of work of ongoing contracts could be expanded to
increase the type and quantity of rock mechanics data being
analyzed with particular attention to subsidence and related
environmental consequences of full extraction.

Acceleration of efforts to develop multiple seam mining
techniques for maximum safety, recovery, and economy. Multiple
seam working is unusual on the U.S. scene despite the millions
of tons of coal being potentially sterilized by single seam
mining. Competitively awarded contracts could continue the
analysis initiated under the program, identify targets, and
quantify the benefits of future demonstrations.

Acceleration of research on techniques to recover methane from
gob areas. This work could consist of an expansion of in-house
research to develop better (safer) drilling techniques and
methods of upgrading the product to pipeline quality.

Expand work on the development and design of optimal surface
configurations and/or treatments to reduce erosion, slide
hazards, improve the stability of spoil bank and outslope
deposits, and develop techniques to improve the stability of
highwalls.

The entire Bureau of Mines coal extraction program is structured to provide the needed technological improvements, and at the same time, develop complementary technological advances that will minimize the environmental cost and the health and safety risks to the miners that increased coal production would normally entail.

Mr. Chairman, that concludes my statement. I will do my best to answer questions that you, or other members of this subcommittee may have.
