These accessions are distributed as follows: By purchase_. By gift Total. 1, 172 916 2, 088 In the above total are included 5 volumes received from the United States Veterans' Bureau in 1926 and 318 volumes received in 1927. From the books transferred to us by the bureau in 1927, loans of 16,414 volumes were made to 18 universities, colleges, and schools in the South, and many requests have been received from these and other institutions for similar loans. Books purchased from the Laura Spelman fund have begun to arrive, and in the fields of anthropology, economics, psychology, political science, and business we have made some notable additions. Many new and valuable periodicals have been added to our list through this fund. The demands made upon the university library are now greater than the present building and staff can adequately accommodate. Our reading room provides for less than 100 students in an enrollment in excess of 2,000. The need of a new building is manifest. HONORARY DEGREES No honorary degrees were awarded this year. FINANCES The financial statement for the year 1928-29 is appended. It will be observed that for the third time in several years there is no current deficit. Through the most careful economy the university has been able to apply $27,530.31 toward the reduction of the accumulated deficit. Attention was drawn above to gifts made by private philanthropy during the year toward graduate work and research, increases in salaries, scholarships for the training of teachers in medicine, scholarships for the training of teachers in the natural sciences, books for the natural sciences and for the dental library. Additional funds have also come for graduate scholarships and for physical plant extensions. The total amount appropriated to Howard University by private philanthropy during the year was $905,000. This represents a vote of confidence in the work of the university which, together with the vote of the United States Congress authorizing an annual appropriation for Howard University and substantially increasing its appropriation for the year 1929, is deeply encouraging to the administration and is a hopeful sign of the possibility of establishing here in Washington an educational service of far-reaching significance to the colored people of the United States. The auditing of our accounts has been done by chartered accountants. All moneys appropriated to us by Congress have been expended under the rigid supervision of the Department of the Interior.
