Reputation among the People, and fuch an Honour and Authority in the Discharge of their Function, that from reverencing the Perfon, and commending the Pattern, they wou'd infenfibly proceed to the Imitation of it; till, by degrees, the Flock too, as well as the Shepherd, wou'd become wife to Salvation, wou'd devoutly fanctify the Lord GOD in their Hearts; and not only fo, but be ready always to give an Answer to every one that fhou'd ask them a reafon of the Hope that is in them.

And were both Clergy and Laity thus rightly Principl'd, and firmly Refolu'd, the Enemies of our Zions wou'd have both lefs Encouragement to attack, and lefs Power to hurt us; Our National Church might then defpife all the wicked Attempts and Defigns that are daily

made and form'd 'against her, and affume to Herself that comfortable Promife and Affurance, that our Saviour Himself has given, that even the Gates of Hell fhall never be able to prevail against Her.

All that I have further to fay, is only to Apologize for having faid fo much, upon a Subject that fo little needs it; and to clofe the whole with my hearty Prayers to the Throne of Grace, that this Pious and Excellent Book may meet with that defir'd Effect and Succefs, which the Author aim'd at in the Compofing of it, and may be as useful to Others, as it was to Himself.
