The addition to and renovation of the existing centrifuge facilities provided NASA and the University with one of the few instruments then capable of supporting the larger test payloads being built for flight. These facilities were used for human and animal testing, and contributed to the training of eighteen predoctoral candidates who received doctoral degrees. This building houses most of the University's radiophysics and spacerelated research under the direction of Professor Gold. Specific activities include developmental research on magnetometers for use in interplanetary space, and lunar materials analysis. Twenty-three predoctoral candidates studying in these and related areas at the University, have been awarded doctoral degrees. This building accommodates the University's multidisciplinary research in space-related areas. Particular research includes work on the physics of solid materials, analysis of particle flux in aurorae, and maximum mach number wind tunnel test section conditions. Seventy-seven predoctoral trainees doing research in these and related areas, have been awarded doctoral degrees. These facilities provide a unique capability at the University's Jet Propulsion Center for graduate training led by Professors Zucrow and Reese. Research is being done on performance, heat transfer characteristics, combustion phenomena, starting and shut-down transients for small rocket motors burning high energy, toxic propellants at high combustion pressures. Nineteen predoctoral trainees, supported in this and similar space-related research at the University, have been awarded doctoral degrees. |
