This structure is physically and organizationally connected with the Enrico Fermi Institute and the Institute for Computer Research. Research activities include investigations of the solar wind; cosmic ray induced radio-activity in meteorites; measurements of primary cosmic radiation; molecular organization of extraterrestrial matter; studies of energetic particles and processes in interplanetary space; and lunar sample analysis. Professors Simpson, Meyer and Turkevich are among many prominent scientists who have helped thirty-eight predoctoral candidates achieve their Ph.D.

This building provides for a broad program of space research, primarily in physics under Van Allen. Some specific research includes methods of noxious gas removal from spacecraft, analysis of the components of the rediation belt, and flight experiments on POGO. The scientists and graduate students working with Van Allen constitute one of the most creative and valuable research groups in the national space program. Fifty-two graduate students, working on space-related areas such as these, have been awarded doctoral degrees.

This building provides for the University's major effort in multidisciplinary research involving engineering, physical, biological and social sciences. Among specific areas of research are mathematical studies of orbit theory, cosmic radiation, shock waves in ionized gases, chemical analysis of the lunar surface material, and infrared spectra of plants and biological materials. Twenty-five predoctoral trainees have been awarded doctoral degrees for work in these and related fields.

This addition to the University's Physics and Astronomy Building accommodates many prominent scientists active in space and atmospheric physics. Professors Ney, Waddington, Mantis, Winckler, and Nier are doing notable research in cosmic rays, solar corona phenomena, gamma rays, zodiacal light, satellite instrumentation, stellar motion, and the analysis of meteorites. These scientists have been instrumental in training fiftynine predoctoral candidates working in these and related areas, who have been awarded doctoral degrees.
