The first State insurance department in the United States was established by act of the Massachusetts Legislature in 1855, and since that time annual reports have been issued by an increasing number of departments, and with growing completeness and fullness of detail, until at the present time nearly every feature of the insurance business is fully reported and brought under review for the enlightenment and benefit of the general insuring public. There are now over two hundred and sixty active level premium American life insurance companies that are licensed and report to the various insurance departments, the principal items of whose statements are presented in the following pages, thereby saving laborious research through the various volumes of insurance reports. The figures in this department cover the twenty years 1895-1914, inclusive, for all active organizations. A complete statistical history of all active United States life insurance companies, from the date of organization to the close of 1910, is contained in the work Life Insurance History, 1843-1910, published by The Spectator Company, price $5. A copy of that work, in connection with the annual volume of The Insurance Year Book, will show the entire history of the life insurance business to date. For lists of officers and directors see pages immediately following this department. $ $ $ 1914 12,373,674 5,341,294 1913 12,024,878 5.474 733 1912 11,215,253 5,211,759 1911 10,826,641 4,581,306 17,714.968 17,499,611 16,427,012 15,407,947 10,684,621 1909 1905 $ $ 4,884.841 2,740,585 2,938,692 1,499,014 4,053,421 2,625,810 2,642,446 1.512,229 3,901,702 2,744.499 2,516,869 1,275,903 3,815,386 2,562,773 1,979,221 1,222,688 4.444,494 15,129,115 3,888,173 2,744.639 1,887,987 10,547.295 4,067,785 14,615,080 3.644.255 1,662,674 1,726,050 1908 10,632,731 3,595,951 14,228,683 3.353,962 2,368,175 1,819,804 1907 10,256,271 3,532,208 13,788,479 1906 10,360,549 3,624,685 13,985.234 9,952,940 3,259,454 13,212,394 * Name changed to Lincoln Reserve Life Insurance Company, April 1, 1915. $ $ *$ 119,516,736 $101,734.441 113.956,997 $98,525,145 110,523.775 $95.957,419 104,755.535 $92,948,500 11,807,035 89,600,862 | 11,417,281 $ 17,782,295 15.431,852 14,566,356 $ 63,966,986 187,400 380,798,405 52,240,888 184.616 355.535,221 45,131,355 178,891 334,916,353 36,024.545 172.973 318,604,631 35,993.750 170,208 307,102,649| 101,018,143 34,220,865 165,560 293,523,233 97,227,608 $87,050,404 10,177,204 28,844.454 160,245 279,665,227 92,124,625 81,883,407 10,241,218 27,307,767 154,039 271,027,574 86,405,473 78,460,727 7,944,746 28,799,436 150,764 261,362,984 84,029,752 74,406,252 9.623,500 30,277,698 146,215 250,858,315 79,247,504 71,229,895 8,017,609 28,856,967 138,538 237,304.739 73,696,179 66,275.046 26,631,862 130,098 223,302,877 68,067,863 61,468,186 25,211,306 $123,002 $211,182,065 63.401,214 25,141,075 117,314 201,278,283 39,321,247 112,460 192,592,816 24.908,401 100,271 168,449,790 22,494,983 94,327 157,392,932 21,770,825 90,346 150,661,897 21,862,448 87,658 145.635.940 85,368 140,027,260 20,744,280 •Reserves since 1898 at 3 and 31⁄2 per cent. 7,421,133 6,599,677 57,015,429 6,385,785 59.590,053 53.540,450 6,049,603 56,064,719 50,281,953 5,782,766 52,825,059 46,729,370 6,095,689 50,205,721 42,376,950 7,828,771 47,543,628 43.560,038 40,146,173 7,397,455 45.557,272 38,368,921 7,188,351 36,667,520 6,892,518 Includes special reserve in excess of State requirements. § Assets, liabilities and surplus include accident branch. |
