Each year several thousand trees lining the streets are damaged or destroyed by vehicles, disease, weather, and air pollution. Dead trees are prone to fall during windstorms, causing possible injury and property damage. They are aesthetically displeasing and also harbor insects that attack living trees and plants. Additional improvements such as stabilizing slopes by reducing erosion and minor landscaping of roadsides may also be accomplished in this project. OPERATING BUDGET IMPACT The impact on the District's operating budget will be negligible. Delay in IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY This project will create construction jobs in the private sector. The comprehensive plan states specifically that street trees should be maintained and trees that have died or been destroyed should be replaced.
