Not only has Dwight Macdonald written the most succinct, incisive, and entertaining film criticism in the English language, he is an effective filter for separating real film fans from the mass of people who like movies. The latter have never even heard of him, which is entirely their loss. I was a student of his in 1970, and he brought the same high standards and broad understanding to his teaching as he did to his writing. The book is out-of-print, but copies are easily available on the Web. --Irene Schneider, New York City
