Mr. Hall, whose works now slumber peacefully in that chamber to which Carlyle relegated "dry-as dust" books, was once the best hated of men on this side of the Atlantic, not because he merited that distinction, but because he disapproved of our democratic experiment and said so in no uncertain voice. Democracy thereupon lost its temper, and promptly enriched Mr. Hall, by buying his book-an American method still in vogue for discouraging foreign critics.
