here mentioned is perpetual and univerfal. And that that the Baptifm here mentioned is not that with Afflictions, I need not prove; because none ever pretended it. Wherefore the Baptifm here mentioned must be Baptifm with fome Liquor, and confequently with Water; there being no other element wherewith a Man is faid in the Holy Scriptures to be baptized.

3. St. Peter commanded Cornelius and his Friends to be baptized in the Name of the Lord Jefus, Acts 10.48. and 'tis evident from the preceeding verfe, that he meant Water-Baptifm; because he faies, Can any Man forbid Water, that these should not be baptized? And confequently St. Peter commanded Cornelius and his Friends to be baptized with Water in the Name of the Lord Jesus. And confequently the Baptifm mentioned in this Text must be Water-Baptifm; because the Baptifm mentioned in this Text is Baptifm in the Name of the Lord Jesus. For our Savior exprefly com mands, that it be in the Name of the Son as well as of the Father and the Holy Ghoft.

But 'tis objected, that the Apostles are commanded to baptize, not eis rò dap into the Water, but is to vou into the Name (or Power) of the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft. In answer to which Objection I muft fhew what is meant by being baptized eis von into the Name of Father, Son and Holy Ghoft. Now in Scripture-phrase the Name of a Perfon, fignifies the Perfon himself. This appears from the following Inftances. And praise thy name, that is, and praife thee, Pf.448. That defpife my name, that is, defpife me, Mal. 1. 6. All that call on thy name, that is, on thee, Acts 9. 14. He must suffer for my Names fake, that is, for my fake, v. 16. And accordingly, when St. Pe

ter faics, Neither is there Salvation in any other ; for there is none other name under Heaven given among Men, whereby we must be faved, Acts 4. 12. the other name plainly fignifies another person, and is the fame with the other (that is, other person) going before. And when St. Paul faies, that our Savior is exalted far above every name that is named, Eph. 1. 21. he means, that he is exalted far above every perfon whatsoever. But examples are numberlefs. Wherefore the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft, fignifies the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft; and the Name of Chrift fignifies our Savior himself. And confequently to be baptized into the Name of Father, Son and Holy Ghost, fignifies to be baptized into Father, Son and Holy Ghoft; and to be baptized into the Name of Chrift fignifies to be baptized into Chrift.

But then the Queftion will still be, what is meant by being baptized into the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft, or (which is the fame thing, only expreffed more briefly) into Chrift. In Anfwer to which I obferve, that the word Chrift fignifies fometimes our Savior's Body the Church. Thus when the Apoftle faies, all the Members of that one Bodys being many are one Body; fo alfo is Chrift, 1 Cor. 12. 12. the word Chrift plainly denotes his Body the Church. And to be in Chrift denotes being a Chriftian, or a Member of our Savior's Body the Church, Rom. 16. 7. 2 Cor. 5. 17. and 12. 2. and to fall, a fleep in Chrift is to die a Chriftian or a Member of the Church, 1 Cor. 15. 18. At other times the word Chrift fignifies our Savior's DoArine. Thus the Apoftle faies, ye have not fo learned Chrift, that is, ye have not fo learned his Doctrine, Eph. 4. 20.

And

And accordingly to be baptized into Chrift, or into Chrift's Name, fignifies, either to be by Baptifm made a Member of his Body the Church, or to be thereby made a Profeffor of his Doctrine, that is, to be by Baptifm inferted into the number of his Difciples. And thus St. Paul proves, that the Corinthians ought not to feparate themfelves into distinct Sects and Parties, diftinguished by the Names of Paul, Apollos, &c. as if St. Paul, Apollos, &c. were the Authors of feveral diftinct -Sects or Parties of Men, and had Difciples called by their respective Names, and different from each other; Ifay, St. Paul proves, that the Corinthians ought not thus to feparate themfelves into diftin& Sects and Parties, because they were not baptized in the Name of Paul, Apollos, or the like, and thereby made the Difciples of different Men: but they were all baptized in the Name of Chrift, and confequently they were all of one and the fame Sect or Party, as being all of them the Disciples of the fame Chrift, in whofe Name they were all baptized. Thus alfo being baptized into Mofes (which is the fame as into the Name of Mofes ) -fignifies being made Difciples of Mofes, 1 Cor.

Wherefore, when a Man does by Baptifm give and refign himself up wholly to God the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft, and folemnly oblige himfelf to live according to their Will; he is then baptized in (or into) the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft, or (for brevity fake) in (or into) Chrift or Chrift's Name. Now this is done when a. Man is baptized with Water. For he is then engrafted into the Church, and becomes an outward Member of it, or a Professor of Chrifti. anity.

'Tis true the Apoftles are commanded to baptize, not eis to idup into the Water, but eis drop into the Name. But the Water is that wherewith they were commanded to baptize els drug into the Name. But the Name it felf cannot be that wherewith they were to baptize Men; for then they would have been commanded to baptize, not is "ropes in (or into) the Name, but royal with the Name. Forthat wherewith the perfon is baptized, is alwaies governed by the particle &, which is conftantly to be tranflated with, and not in or

into.

And confequently, tho' it fhould be granted, that the word voa, which we tranflate Name, does fometimes fignify Power, which (by the way) I do by no means allow; yet I fay, if it fhould be granted; and if we fhould also grant, that the Apoftles were commanded to baptize into the Power of Father, Son and Holy Ghoft, that is, in the judgment of our Adverfaries, to endue Men with the Power and Grace of God; yet ftill the Greek will not fuffer us to fay that they were commanded to baptize with that Power or Grace. Wherefore they were certainly commanded to baptize Men with Water into the Church, or by Water-Baptifm to make them Members of Christ's Body; or (if our Adverfaries will not be fatisfied, unless they interpret their own way) they were commanded by Water-Baptifm to make Men partakers of the Power and Grace of God.

Fourthly, I fhall prove, that we are commanded to be baptized with Water, from what the Scriptures attribute to Water- Baptifm. For Inftance.

1. We are made Chrift's Difciples by it. For our Savior faies, Go, teach (or make Difciples of) all Nations, baptizing (that is, by baptizing) them

in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft, Matt. 28. 19. in which Text I have hewn, that Water-Baptifm is meant.

2. We are fanctified and cleanfed by it. For Christ is faid to fanctify and cleanse us with the wafing of Water by the Word, Eph. 26. where the washing of Water can fignifie nothing else but Water-Baptifm; which by virtue of Chrift's Inftitu tion gives each baptized perfon a fhare of his Merits, thro' which alone our Sins are forgiven, and we purged from the filth and pollution of them.

If it be objected, that outward Water cannot fanctify and cleanfe us; I anfwer, that outward Water in its own nature cannot do it, but by Chrift's Appointment it may and does, to thofe who are duly baptized therewith.

3. By Water-Baptifm we are faved, that is, put into a flate of Salvation. This appears from the Apoftle's faying, according to his mercy he faved us by the washing of Regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, Tit.3.5. in which words, as the renewing of the Holy Ghoft is that birth of the Spirit mentioned John 3. 5. fo is the washing of Regeneration that birth of Water which is alfo there mentioned. Now I have fhewn, that each of them is commanded by our Savior, as neceflary in order to a Man's feeing or entring into the Kingdom of God; and confequently by the Participation of them a Man is faved or put into a state of Salvation, as St. Paul here affirms.

Again, our Savior faies, He that believeth and is baptized. fhall be faved, Mark 16. 16. The Baptifm here mentioned muft of Neceffity be WaterBaptifm; becaufe 'tis plainly the fame with that mentioned Matt. 28. 19. which I have proved to be Water-Baptifm. Befides, the Baptifm here V 2
