COLLECTION CATALOGUE FOR
CATALOGUE FOR NATURALISTS.

TO COLLECTORS.

MR. HARDWICKE has great pleasure in announcing that he has, through the kindness of MR. J. E. HARTING, author of "The Birds of Middlesex," been enabled to place at the disposal of the various collectors in Natural History a form of Catalogue which will be found of infinite service. The following preface will explain itself:

PREFACE.

A really good catalogue, upon a simple and inexpensive plan, has long been a desideratum with naturalists and collectors. Few will originate or prepare a catalogue for themselves, and whilst gratifying their taste in acquiring possession of beautiful objects in every branch of Natural History, they deprive Science of much important information regarding the habitat and geographical distribution of species, simply for want of some method or plan on which to arrange the history of each specimen collected. It is a frequent matter of regret that large and otherwise valuable collections are brought to the hammer, or presented to some public museum, and rendered comparatively useless for want of such a history. Again, how many naturalists pass through life, enriched with knowledge gleaned from Nature's inexhaustible store, but whose knowledge, alas! dies with them, for they leave behind them no record with their collections. The only two skeleton catalogues hitherto published have each two manifest disadvantages. They compel the collector to adopt a particular "system" which he may not approve, and they confine within too narrow limits the space allotted to each species. Moreover they are designed exclusively for ornithologists; the present one commends itself to all naturalists, whether they be ornithologists, entomologists, botanists, conchologists, or mineralogists.

The plan suggested in the following pages will obviate these difficulties, and will, it is conceived, meet all the requirements of the collector in every branch of Natural History.

The following examples, selected at random, will explain, perhaps, better than words can express, in what way the Catalogue is intended to be used.

The author does not pretend to claim any merit for so simple a plan as that now proposed. His sole aim has been to place in the hands of every naturalist an inexpensive aid to the promotion of Science.
