SHEPPARD, California JOHN TABER, New York HON. GEORGE C. MARSHALL, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE GEN. N. F. TWINING, VICE CHIEF OF STAFF, UNITED STATES AIR ADMIRAL FORREST P. SHERMAN, CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS, BRIG. GEN. R. S. MOORE, SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE COMP- MEMBERSHIP OF THE COMMITTEE Mr. MAHON. The committee will please be in order. I should like to note for the record that present with the Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations today, in addition to our regular members on the Democratic side, Mr. Sheppard, Mr. Sikes, and myself, the chairman of the full committee, Mr. Cannon, is going to sit with us; also Mr. Norrell of Arkansas and Mr. Rabaut of Michigan. On the Republican side-there is really no party line in this committee -there will be Mr. Taber, Mr. Wigglesworth, and Mr. Scrivner. While we welcome the new members on the committee, I am sure all of us will miss the services of our former colleagues, Mr. Engel and Mr. Plumley. They have been two stalwart members of the committee for many many years. It is unfortunate that the committee will lose their valuable services at this critical time. SUPPLEMENTAL REQUEST FOR FUNDS Within the hour the President has sent to the House of Representatives a request for an additional appropriation for the Department of Defense in the sum of about $16,844,000,000 which, roughly, would provide the Army with about $9,200,000,000, the Navy with roughly $3,000,000,000 and the Air Force with roughly $4,600,000,000. The supplemental request will be inserted at this point: (1) 1461366 U of M Bindery APR 14'54 |
