to Heat; a Garden is in Light, and not at the fame Time in Heat during Winter, but it is in Light and Heat together during Summer: Man therefore, who is in the Light of Understanding alone, is as a Garden in the Winter Season; but he who is in the Light of the Understanding and at the fame Time in the Warmth of the Will, is as a Garden in the Summer Seafon. The Understanding also is wife by Virtue of spiritual Light, and the Will loves by Virtue of spiritual Heat ; for fpiritual Light is the Divine Wifdom, and fpiritual Heat is the Divine

Love.

So long as Man doth not fhun Evils as Sins, the Concupifcencies of Evils close up the Interiors of the natural Mind on the Part of the Will, which are there as a dense Veil, and as a dark Cloud beneath the spiritual Mind, and prevent the spiritual Mind from being opened: But as foon as Man fhuns Evils as Sins, then

the Lord flows in out of Heaven, and re- moves the Veil, and difperfes the Cloud, and opens the fpiritual Mind, and thereby lets Man into Heaven.

So long as the Concupifcencies of Evils close up the Interiors of the natural Mind, as was faid, fo long Man is in Hell; but as foon as those Concupifcencies are dif perfed by the Lord, Man is in Heaven. Further; fo long as the Concupifcencies of Evils clofe up the Interiors of the natural Mind, fo long Man is merely natural; but as foon as thofe Concupifcencies are difperfed by the Lord, he becomes a spiritual Man. Again; fo long as the Concupifcencies of Evils close up the Interiors of the natural Mind, fo long Man is a mere Animal, differing only in this, that he hath Power to think and fpeak, even concerning fuch Things as he doth not fee with his Eyes, which is a Confequence of the Faculty he enjoys of elevating his Understanding into the Light of Heaven;

but

but as foon as thofe Concupifcencies are difperfed by the Lord, Man becometh Man, because he then thinks what is true in the Understanding by Virtue of what is good in the Will. Laftly; fo long as the Concupifcencies of Evils close up the Interiors of the natural Mind, fo long Man is as a Garden in the Winter Seafon; but as foon as thofe Concupifcencies are difperfed by the Lord, he is like a Garden in the Time of Summer.

The Conjunction of the Will and the Understanding with Man is meant in the Word by Heart and Soul, and by Heart and Spirit, as where it is faid that " God fhould be loved out of the whole Heart and out of the whole Soul," Matt. xxii. 35 ; and that "God would give a new Heart, and a new Spirit," Ezech. xi. 19. Chap. xxxvi. 26, 27; by Heart is meant the Will and it's Love, and by Soul, and by Spirit, the Understanding and it's Wisdom.

87. B

Y bearing falfe Witness, in a na

tural Senfe, is not only meant to act in the Character of a false Witness, but alfo to lie and to defame: By bearing falfe Witness in a fpiritual Senfe is meant, to affert and endeavour to perfuade others that what is falfe is true, and that what is evil is good, and vice verfa: But in a fupreme Sense by bearing falfe Witness is meant to blafpheme the Lord and the Word: This it is to bear falfe Witnefs in a three-fold Senfe. That these several Kinds of falfe Witnefs make one with every Man who acts as a falfe Witness, who tells a Lie, and defames his Neighbour, may appear from what was fhewn in the DOCTRINE CONCERNING THE SACRED SCRIPTURE, in Relation to the

three-fold Senfe of all that is contained in

the Word, n. 5, 6, 7, and 57.

Inafmuch as a Lie and Truth are two Oppofites, it follows, that so far as any one fhuns a Lie as Sin, fo far he loves Truth.

89. So far as any one loves Truth, fo far he is defirous to know it, and fo far he is in Heart affected when he finds it; nor can any other attain unto Wisdom; and fo far as he loves to do the Truth, fo far he is made sensible of the Pleasantness of the Light in which the Truth is. The Cafe is fimilar in Refpect to the Subjects spoken of above; as in Respect to Sincerity and Justice with him who fhuns Thefts of every Kind; in Respect to Chastity and Purity with him who fhuns Adulteries of every Kind; and in Respect to Love and Charity with him who shuns Murders of every Kind, &c. But he who is in the Oppofites knows Nothing
