BETHESDA, MD., June 19, 1974.

Sen. CHARLES H. PERCY,
Dirksen Senate Office Building,

Washington, D.C.

DEAR SENATOR PERCY: From the media I have learned that you are conducting an inquiry into "Snooping" both by the government and private source.

This news is indeed welcome! I hope that your inquiry will also include the availability of bank records as will examples such as the enclosed.

I bring to your attention, as an example, a News Week "Subscriber Survey," a copy of which and my reply are enclosed. Unfortunately many gulible people will fall for this type of "Come on."

As you are looking into the matter I will not send a copy of the correspondence to the A.C.L.U.

Should you wish to examine the original "Survey" form I will gladly make it available.

Sincerely yours,

T. H. E. NESBITT.

BETHESDA, MD., May 30, 1974.

Mr. ROBERT RIORDAN,

Circulation Director, Newsweek,

The Newsweek Building, Livingston, N.J.

DEAR MR. RIORDAN: Please be advised that I sent Newsweek a check for $22.00 on May 1, 1974. I am advised by my bank that it was cleared on May 9th.

I regretted both actions very much, following receipt of your undated form renewal notice on or about May 23rd., for the following reasons:

1. The question asked under group #3 of the "Newsweek Subscriber Survey" is entirely personal and none of your damn business.

2. Although you state in the introduction of the "Newsweek Subscriber Survey" that "Your answer will, of course, be confidential", the survey portion contains the number 419 3807 769 which is also on my "active subscriber card"-a business machine data card. It is obvious that any information given in the survey will be fed into the "active subscriber file card" which is not marked confidential nor referred to as such. The card thus becomes part of a data bank which can be used indiscriminately.

3. In my opinion this is a thinly veiled, if not blatant and crude attempt to compile lists of individuals and their income category which I consider to be an invasion of privacy.

For the above reasons I request that you terminate my subscription and refund the $22.00 (for a two-year subscription) less cost of issues received prior to receipt of this letter.

Yours very truly,

T. H. E. NESBITT.

P.S. I may send copies of this letter and your "Survey" to the American Civil Liberties Union and to the appropriate body of the U.S. Congress if your reply is not satisfactory.

Enc. Xerox copy of "Newsweek Subscriber Survey".

To speed through your renewal -- so you'll not miss a single week of important news I've enclosed your active subscriber file card. Please initial and return it at once.

Modern business and tabulating machines are marvels of efficiency, but the punched cards which control them must pass through many departments, and days are required to prepare them. The enclosed card contains all the information we need to continue your subscription uninterrupted.

A special reply envelope is provided to speed handling your card. Please do sign it and use the stamp to return it to us today.

Thank you,

Circulation Director

And if you haven't already done so, won't you take a moment to fill out our subscriber survey. Without your participation, it can't be a real It will help some worthy organizations as well. Thanks.

Sen. CHARLES PERCY.

R.R. No. 1, SMITHSHIRE, ILL., June 19, 1974.

DEAR SIR: As I have seen in the papers, you are fighting the invasion of privacy of the citizens of this nation. I thought I would send you this portion of advertisement my Step-mother and I received. It will be enclosed in this letter. On April 9th 1974, Mother and I bought a new car. After reading this ad material enclosed you will know the make, year, and type. Also my occupation. This ad arrived about the 17th of June, so you see how little privacy anyone has.

I rather imagine by now even the government has this information in a computer bank. Maybe also the Russians and God alone knows who else.

Now all this information gathering costs money, and I know that a lot of tax funds are being spent this way.

Senator, I know that you used to be a top-notch machinist with Bell & Howell. And I'm sure you didn't appreciate every move you made known, as it seem's to be the case to-day. I hope you will fight this privacy thing, to as a successful conclusion as you did your job with Bell & Howell.

While I'm writing this, I might as well go into other areas.

First of all Welfare,

Since minimum wages, we have knowledge of one case where the man will not work for more than the min. wage and just so many hours so that he can collect food stamps etc. since min. wage went to $2 he has cut off one days work. Much to his employer's dissatisfaction, this same man has a welfare worker haul his wife 11 miles to the laundry mat. This worker gets $2 per hour for this. Welfare even purchased him a sewing machine for his wife & it is said she doesn't even know how to sew. This man is in his 30's.

Another case is a man 47 yrs. old. He owns 14 acres of ground, upon which he lives. His wife is on A.D.C. & has 4 children, (these are her children). He's paid house rent for the above members of his family, then he has 3 children by a previous marrage & he is paid rent for himself & one son. Now, his oldest girl was in Texas & married, she became pregnant and he went to Texas & brought her here for welfare to take care of. More than likely he is collecting rent for her off welfare. He also went back to Texas to try and get her husband to come here, as he was in trouble in Texas something about stealing guns.

He was working for a contractor 7 yrs. ago and claims an injury to his back. Make's him unable to work. But he tears down old building and sells the lumber, also cuts and hauls steel, old cars, machinery etc. In fact, I had him helping me for a few days at $3.50 per hr. There was 2 week's which we couldn't work here and when he came back he claimed he had made a thousand dollar in those two weeks. Now does that sound like a man who couldn't work? Besides this the welfare has paid hospital bills for him of $10,000 or more. From what I can find out they really haven't found to much wrong.

Also, during these 2 weeks which he claimed he made this thousand dollars the welfare bought him a new elect. range & some other appliance. Plus lineolum floor covering.

These are two cases of which I personally know, just in this locale, so just imagine how enormous this must be over the whole nation.

This I do know, this kind of Welfare, Mim. Wage Control etc. makes it very rough for small farmer's & Business to hire help. We just don't have that kind of Incomes. And also people can make more on Welfare than they can working, and no taxes to pay. So in my opinion welfare is cutting the nation's throat. I also feel the Whole situation of Welfare is a vote getting scheme.

Another thing before you can control inflation the Wages of the working man will have to have a max. limit. I've worked out all my life except the last 7 yrs. starting when I was 14 yrs. old & I've advocated this to Paul Douglas when I was working by the Hour & he was on the finance committee.

Welfare is cutting the am't. of Income tax Payer's, making a heavier tax Burden on fewer & fewer People, The Government is spending more & more, in all Ways including trying to buy friendship & Peace, Slowly they are killing the goose that lays the golden egg, then What?

If you read this, I Thank you for your time.

You also have my permission to use this Ad. if it Will Help you make Your Point in your fight.

I remain,

Yours respectfully

JOHN I. ICENOGLE.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO THE ICENOGLE FAMILY?

Just this! It means there is a way to protect that beautiful new cloth or vinyl upholstery and at the same time make it even more beautiful and more comfortable than it is now.

INSTALL A SET OF TRANSPARENT CUSTOM TAILORED
1974 MAVERICK AIR-FLO SEAT COVERS

We've measured the upholstery of a 1974 Ford exactly
like yours and added it to the one thousand, nine hundred
and fifty different custom Air Flo patterns we keep on hand.
(We don't have "universal" or "one-size-fits-all" covers
like most automotive stores and catalog houses.) The number
on the left represents your pattern series, so when you
affix your pattern stamp and verify the information on the
reverse side of the card above, we know exactly what kind
of upholstery you have. Then we can send you a tailored
set of Air Flo covers made for your car -- just like they
were fitted in a custom trim shop!

And with a set of Air Flo covers protecting your uphol-
stery, you never again have to worry about stains, rips,
spots, burn holes, tears... or, about losing that fresh,
natural beauty your Ford upholstery has DOW.

Because if anything does happen -- if someone drops a cigar-
ette ash or sits down with a sharp object in his pocket or
whatever -- the damage isn't permanent. You spoil the seat
cover instead of the seat. And we'll replace the worn or
damayeû Al Flo section -- Legardless of what happened, how
long you own your car or how many times you need replacements
-- for just $1.98 per section.

That's right! Air Flo protects your upholstery
hiding it one bit.
