72.5D-1 Compliance with specification 5A; exceptions. (a) Containers must comply with all provisions of specification 5A except as follows:

(c) In place of § 72.5A-3 (e), the following:

Complete rubber lining of pliable rubber must be cemented or otherwise applied so as to adhere securely to metal surface, and must be vulcanized so as to be tough and pliable. Closing devices shall be lined with hard or pliable rubber.

(d) Add paragraph to § 72.5A-5, as follows: Each lined container must be tested for defect in lining. Container must be filled with salt, alkaline, or acid solution, of sufficient strength to be a good conductor of an electrical current. One terminal of at least 110-volt electrical circuit must be secured to clean surface of container sheet through a sensitive ammeter. The other terminal, with insulation removed, must be submerged in the solution within the container. Ammeter must show zero current reading during test.* [Pars. 1-4]

(f) Distance of drop under § 72.5A-5 (a) (1) is reduced to 4 feet. (g) Pressure under § 72.5A-5 (a) (2) is reduced to 15 pounds. (h) Pressure under § 72.5A-5 (b) is reduced to 7 pounds and the following is added:

Containers with nominal capacity of 5 gallons, not equipped with screw-thread closing devices, shall be exempt from air-pressure test.

(i) Drums of 25 gallons or greater capacity must be made with heads convex (crowned), but not extending beyond the level of the chimes. The minimum convexity of heads must be five-eighths inch for drums of capacity 25 to 35 gallons, inclusive, and three-fourths inch for larger drums. [As added Mar. 12, 1936, 1 F.R. 48]

(j) In place of § 72.5A-3 (h), the following is authorized: Threaded metal flanges and plugs, when used as closures, must have adequate gaskets, be tight fitting, and be constructed so that at least three full threads are engaged when plug is screwed home with gasket in place. Closures must be of metal with gaskets of suitable material; all parts closing the opening, except cap seal over threaded plug or cap

Containers must be coated on the outside with corrosion-preventive material.

The use of an austenitic 18- and 8-chrome nickel alloy steel with carbon content not over 0.12 percent is required, except for rolling hoops and chime reinforcements, in the manufacture of these containers. [As amended Jan. 7, 1938, 3 F.R. 132]
