PLEASURE EXCURSIONS.

PANSHANGER,

Seat of Lord Couper,

ON THE EASTERN COUNTIES RAILWAY.

[From the Railway Chronicle.]

[This Excursion will well occupy an entire day; but to see only the pictures at Panshanger five hours between the times of starting from and returning to Bishopsgate station will suffice.]

There are at least two things at Panshanger which make a visit to the place a bright spot in the reminiscences of a life,-one of the most beautiful works of the great Florentine friar, Bartolomeo di S. Marcoperhaps it may be said without risk of contradiction the most beautiful in this country and an oak tree, which for majestic size and symmetrical proportions almost defies rivalry. In the midst of all the thousand works of art which rise above the horizon year after year, and descend without leaving trace of recollection behind them, Fra Bartolomeo's 'Holy Family' stamps an ineffaceable image, which at once takes its place among the treasures of the mind. The oak, too, stands no less remarkable among all memoranda of foliage. But though the tree and the picture are especially singled out for remark, there is much else most pleasant in a journey to Panshanger—a railway ride along a level laid by Nature's own engineering, a well wooded and well watered country, varieties of hill and dale, transit through towns and villages of genuine rusticity, successful examples of luxuriant landscape gardening at Panshanger, and last, though not least, a comfortable repast at the modest little country inn, the White Horse at Hertingfordbury.
