CHAPTER IX. PAPER ON VAN SICKLE FAMILY.* name. The name Van Sickle, like many other names of early immigrants, has undergone many Derivation of changes. The latter part of the name, Sickle, comes from the original occupation of large numbers of the earlier members of the family. They were farmers and the sickle was the emblem of their craft. The word Van means front or foremost, hence the given meaning of Van Sickle is "first among farmers." Forms of name. The form most commonly in use among different branches of the family now is Van Sickle.
