1823

One of the most esteemed works in the whole range of English Topography. Large Paper copies are in much demand, and are rising in price. The above copy has a special interest and value. In Vol. II. are some extra leaves of text: 6 with the signatures 4N-4P, paged *325-*335, containing an account of the parish of Cockerham, in Lonsdale. The other leaf is marked *3 E, and is a title. The absence of these leaves would not be detected by any blank in the notation; Lowndes does not mention their existence. I conclude this portion of the work was printed after the book was issued, and only a very few copies made. Its addition is most desirable, and renders the above copy a valuable acquisition.

"Whitaker shows us how possible it is for a powerful and cultivated mind to condescend to writing Topographical Works, and to mix in a very agreeable manner bold conjecture, deductions of general interest, applications of events in the past to the guidance of men of his own time, and spirited delineations both of manners and scenery, with those dry details which are indispensable in works of this kind.

"Dr. Whitaker's publications have had a great influence in raising the tone and character of topographical writing in England."-Gent's. Mag., 1853, Aug.
