MAINLAND, Clerk and Staff Director (II) DEFENSE DEPARTMENT APPROPRIATIONS FOR 1980 TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1979. TESTIMONY OF MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND OTHER INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS NATIONAL GUARD ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES WITNESSES MAJOR GENERAL FRANCIS S. GREENLIEF, USA (RET.), EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT COLONEL DONALD R. PERKINS, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT, ARMY AFFAIRS COLONEL MERLE F. ALLEN, JR. EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT, AIR AFFAIRS INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT Mr. ADDABBO. The subcommittee will come to order. First let me apologize to all our witnesses and visitors, we review perhaps one of the largest budgets but have one of the smallest hearing rooms. We are allocated this room because normally our hearings are closed because of the sensitive and classified matters which come before this committee. There is a Democratic Caucus going on or will go on at about 10 o'clock. So if Members of this committee are not here, it is not because they are not interested but in fact they are involved in other congressional business. Statements will be carefully studied and reviewed prior to markup, which is expected to be, hopefully, sometime the latter part of June so there will be sufficient time for all Members to fully review these matters. The record will remain open for 10 days. So if there are witnesses who wish to submit further information they may do so. If any of our witnesses do not wish to appear personally before the committee, their statements will be given to the Members of the committee and staff and be made part of the official record. We do have a long list of witneses, approximately 30. We are going to do our best to accommodate all. I would respectfully request that if you do have lengthy statements or complete statements to place them in the record and I would ask that they be summarized for the benefit of those Members who are here. I am also advised by staff that there is a long line of visitors out in the hall and many of them are witnesses. So I would ask those who do testify or those who have attended part of the hearings, after a reasonable time, if they would leave to give others a chance to take part or witness this hearing. |
