PREFACE.

TO THE READER :

The following Papers were written during, or at the edge of, occasional holidays in the midst of heavy Pastoral Work.

As they recall to me with healthy freshness the scenes where most of them were jotted down, and have stirred, not unpleasantly, the sense of quiet recreation in many of my friends, I have ventured to string them on the thread of holiday thought after the fashion now in your hands.

I push my little boat out into the great paper fleet which daily risks the wind of

public opinion, in hope that it may carry to

you some of the spirit of glad rest which I found in shaping the pieces which I have here put together.

I beg to thank the Proprietors of Chambers's Journal, Once a Week, and the Leisure Hour, for their permission to reprint such of these Papers as have appeared in their respective Periodicals.
