REGISTERS.

BEMROSE'S BINNS' SCHOOL REGISTERS.

Messrs. BEMROSE & SONS call attention to their New Editions of 'Binns' School Registers,' and to the following memoranda they have received from Mr. Binns :

1. Editions in Boards, Wire-stitched.--I am much pleased with the get-up of the Attendance, Evening School, and School Fees Registers. I am sure the books will meet with general approval from teachers, and will be preferred by many of them.

2. The Recent Alteration of the Regulations as to Certificates, &c.-The January Return to the Local Authority is no longer required. But the two new tables at the opening of the Attendance Register,' and the new column of the quarterly opening,' will continue to be of great service if carefully filled up. The certain items of information only to be found in the Register of the previous year' are liable to daily demand for the purposes of the Child's School Book and the Local Authority, as well as, at the close of the school year, for the claim for 'Honours Certificates with payment of school fees.'

WRITING.

BEMROSE'S CODE COPY-BOOKS.

ADOPTED BY THE LONDON AND OTHER SCHOOL BOARDS.

The SCHOOLMASTER' of May 24 says:-'We have on former occasions expressed a favourable opinion of this excellent series of copy-books. The two additional numbers (No. 0 and No. 6) will render the scheme of instruction still more progressive. In No. 0 there are bold exercises in rudimentary forms, with printed suggestions at the top of each page. In No. 6 the models are in beautifully clear small hand, and give excellent work for imitation. The PupilTeachers' Copy-Book of this series, also intended to give practice for the annual examination, is well worthy of attention.' The Series consists of 16 Books. 24 Pages. 2d. each. 1s. 6d. per dozen to Schools. Specimens, with particulars of contents, post free, upon application.

COOKERY.

FOOD AND ITS PREPARATION:

A Course of Twenty Lectures delivered to upwards of Five Hundred Girls from Elementary Schools. By Mrs.
W. T. GREENUP. Small crown 8vo. cloth, 2s. 6d.

"We have to thank the author of "Food and its Preparation" for a book that ought to be in the hands of every girl, whatever ber station in life. We did not think that it was possible to make such a subject so attractive. All that Mrs. Greenup says is sensible, practical, and easy to carry out. There are some cookery receipts founded on experience, and much useful teaching on food in its relations to the body and to health. The remarks on Australian meat, p. 97; how to eat, p. 116; invalid cookery, p. 162; cleanliness, pure air, drainage, clean habits, clothing, and temperance, from pp. 185 to 191; on home, p. 284; and the concluding chapter, are excellent. With these twenty lectures in her hand, a lady might give most valuable instruction to classes of children or young servants.'-SCHOOL GUARDIAN.

BOOKS.

THE

THE LONDON READERS. PUBLIC SCHOOL

THE prominence now given in the New
Code to the requirement of reading
'with intelligence,' has made a variety
of books an absolute necessity for each
Public Elementary School. It has also
made it not only desirable, but essential,
that children should be interested in what
they read; for without the excitement
of interest, intelligence is impossible.

The popularity of their former Readers
of the Public School' and Elementary
School Series' has brought to the Pub-
lishers a number of suggestions from ex-
perienced educationists, many of which
are embodied in the London Readers.

In addition to careful graduation, clearness of type, and pleasing appear ance of page, the new series is marked by a freshness of matter which, it is hoped, will make it a welcome variety for teachers, and attract the attention of children.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. "This series may be recommended for the freshness and variety of its materials. The volumes are well got up and furnished with good illustrations at a moderate price.'-Athenæum,

'A singularly good and complete series.'-Guardian.

Nothing could be better than the "Public School Series," commencing from the simplest materials, and proceeding gradually to the more complex.' -Westminster Review.

"The series is one of the best and most carefully compiled extant; indeed, there are few that approach it in excellence. We are glad to see books of this kind well and abundantly illustrated. Young children are educated by the eye as much as by the ear, and the instruments of education in this direction ought to be as good as possible.'-Scotsman.

Arithmetics for Schools and Colleges.

ELEMENTARY ARITHMETIC, and How to Teach

It. By GEORGE RICKS, B.Sc., Inspector to the School Board for London. Crown 8vo. 4s. 6d. Scotsman. A great many rudimentary treatises on arithmetic have been published of late years, but we do not remember one which for clearness, completeness, or real practical assistance to the schoolmaster, can be compared to this. Mr. Ricks begins at the beginning, with a series of lessons for infants' schools, and has a separate portion for each class up to advanced scholars. Thus his book can be used in all the departments of a school at the same time, and if steadily worked through it cannot fail to give any pupil of average intellect a thorough acquaintance with Arithmetic.'

School Board Chronicle.-'We predict that this will become a standard book.'

Educational News.- More than realises expectation.'

Teacher.-'A work with which very few other arithmetics are worthy of being compared.'

Second Edition, now ready.

A TEXT-BOOK OF ARITHMETIC, for Use in Higher Class Schools. By THOMAS MUIR, F.R.S.E., Mathematical Master, High School, Glasgow. Crown 8vo. 4s. 6d.

"We cordially commend this work not only for advanced pupils, but also for pupil-teachers, Normal School and College students, and teachers who are desirous of teaching this important branch more thoroughly and more successfully.'SCHOOLMASTER.

'Has a happy association of philosophy and practical simplicity.'-SCHOOL BOARD CHRONICLE.

'One that teachers who wish to teach on sound principles will do well to study.'-SCHOOL GUARDIAN.

'It cannot fail to gain favour with those who desire to make arithmetic a mental discipline, as well as a technical art.'-EDUCATIONAL NEWS.

'Worthy of a place with works of high value . . . fulness of explanation very valuable. Exercises good and varied.'-NATURE.

PRACTICAL HINTS ON THE TEACHING OF ARITHMETIC, with a Short Exposition of its Principles. By DAVID MUNN, F.R.S.E., Mathematical Master, High School, Edinburgh. Crown 8vo. 2s.

"We cordially recommend this little book to all teachers who desire to make arithmetic a logical exercise for the development of the reasoning powers of the pupil.'-EDUCATION TIMES.

It is a book for the instructor, giving him a clear head for all the processes of arithmetic, and filling his mind with fresh methods to be applied to the development of the intelligence of his children.'-SCHOOL BOARD CHRONICLE.

SUGGESTIONS TO THE MANAGERS of PUBLIC

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. Crown 8vo. 2s. 6d.

The suggestions of the Liverpool School Board to the Managers of their schools are published with the consent of the Board, in the hope that they may be useful to other school managers, for though they have special reference to the arrangements and rules of the Liverpool Board, the suggestions refer, with few exceptions, to principles applicable to all elementary schools.
