T

HE increasing love of art in our own country and the great desire for knowledge in all matters connected with the literature of art and the lives of the Great Masters have lately been manifested by signs that cannot possibly be mistaken; and call for the publication of the very important information which modern research has gathered together on every side, and which has now attracted the attention of all students of art-biography both at home and abroad.

The intention of this Series is to produce, in an easily accessible form and at a price within reach of everyone, the results of the recent investigations which have been made by many well-known critics, especially those of Germany and the Netherlands.

Dr. Woltmann has lately published a new edition of his great work on HANS HOLBEIN ; Dr. Meyer a valuable monograph on CORREGGIO ; Professor Carl Lemcke on RUBENS and on VAN DYCK; Dr. Anton

Illustrated Biographies of

Springer on RAPHAEL and on MICHELANGELO; Herr Thausing on ALBRECHT DÜRER; and C. Vosmaer has issued a revision of his celebrated treatise on REMBRANDT. All these works correct old statements that have been proved to be untrue, impart new facts, and add materially to our interest in the histories of the painters. And to no one is more honour due than to Mr. J. A. Crowe and Mr. W. H. J. Weale, who have devoted many years to the investigation of questions bearing upon the Biography of Artists.

Many of the Italian art-critics have likewise recently issued treatises on the great artists of their own country; Uzielli has written learnedly on LIONARDO, and numerous essays have lately appeared on MICHELANGELO. In France scarcely a week passes without the appearance of some new contribution to the History of Art. All this matter is available and will be carefully studied.

It is proposed to issue this new Series in the form of handbooks which may be read in the study, the class-room, or the fields. Each work will be a monograph of a GREAT ARTIST, or a brief history of a GROUP OF ARTISTS of one school; and will contain portraits of the Masters, and as many examples of their art as can be readily procured. Cheapness of price being especially aimed at, the introduction of expensive new engravings will be unadvisable.

Arrangements have therefore been made with the proprietors of some of the most important art-publications on the Continent for the reproduction of many of their costly woodcuts. These will be printed in the very best manner, and each volume of the series will be illustrated with at least fourteen to twenty full-page engravings.

Great care has been bestowed on the ornamentation of the BINDING. The design, by an unknown artist, is copied from the title-page of a TERENCE, published in Venice in 1499. The "end-papers" lining the insides of the cover are reproductions of a drawing for Italian lace.

And in order to render these works available to all classes, the price has been fixed at 3s. 6d. each volume. Two volumes will be issued monthly.
