Cubic yard.

Section 606 GUARD RAIL

Description

606.01 This work shall consist of the construction of guard rail in accordance with these specifications and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

Guard rail systems are designated as follows:

[blocks in formation]

The construction of the various systems of guard rail shall include the assembly and erection of all component parts and materials complete at the locations shown on the plans or as directed. Materials and construction requirements for MB5 and MB6 Guard Rail shall conform to the applicable provisions of Section 552.

Details for guard rail system components shall be as shown on the plans or in the special provisions.

Materials

606.02 Materials. Materials shall meet the requirements specified

in the following subsections of Section 700-Materials:

Paint for field painting of guard rail shall conform to the AASHTO specifications for the type and color specified in the contract. If not otherwise specified, the requirements for "Paint and Painting Metal Structures" of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges shall apply.

Construction Requirements

606.03 Posts. Posts shall be set plumb in hand or mechanically dug holes, unless driving is permitted. In the latter case the manner of driving shall be such as to avoid battering or distorting of posts. Post holes shall be backfilled with acceptable material placed in layers and thoroughly compacted. When it is necessary to cut post holes in existing paving, all loose material shall be removed and the paving replaced in kind.

606.04 Rail Elements. Rail elements shall be erected according to plan details and in a manner resulting in a smooth, continuous installation with laps in the direction of traffic flow. All bolts, except adjustment bolts, shall be drawn tight. Bolts shall be of sufficient length to extend beyond the nuts by not more than one inch (25.4 mm).

Where painting of railing components is specified, any damage to the shop coat of paint shall be corrected by an application of an approved rust-inhibitive primer prior to other painting. Any surfaces inaccessible to painting after erection shall be field painted before erection. The railing components shall be given the specified number of coats of paint uniformly applied by thorough brushing or by approved pressure spray as specified.

Galvanized surfaces which have been abraded so that the base metal is exposed, threaded portions of all fittings and fasteners and cut ends of bolts shall be protected in a manner as may be specified or directed.

When concrete anchors are poured in place, the anchors shall not be connected to the guardrail until 7 days have elapsed from the time of curing concrete.

Method of Measurement

606.05 Guard rail will be measured by the linear foot from center of end posts, except where end connections are made to masonry or steel structures, in which case measurement will be to the face of such structures. Double faced rail attached to the same post will be measured as a single unit.

End anchorages and terminal sections may be measured as units of each kind specified and installed, or they may be included in the quantities of guard rail of the respective type and not measured separately.

Basis of Payment

606.06 The accepted quantities of guard rail will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for the type specified complete in place. When so specified, end anchorages and terminal sections will be paid for at the contract unit price per each of the kind specified complete in place.

Payment will be made under:

607.01 This work shall consist of the construction of fence, gates, and cattle guards in accordance with these specifications and the details shown on the plans and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

Materials

607.02 Materials. Materials shall meet the requirements specified in the following subsections:

[blocks in formation]

Materials for cattle guards shall conform to the requirements shown on the plans.

Construction Requirements

607.03 General. The Contractor shall perform such clearing and grubbing as may be necessary to construct the fence to the required grade and alignment.

At locations where breaks in a run of fencing are required, or at intersections with existing fences, appropriate adjustment in post spacing shall be made to conform to the requirements for the type of closure indicated.

When the plans require that posts, braces or anchors be imbedded in concrete, the Contractor shall install temporary guys, or braces as may be required to hold the posts in proper position until such time as the concrete has set sufficiently to hold the posts. Unless otherwise permitted, no materials shall be installed on posts or strain placed on guys and bracing set in concrete until seven days have elapsed from the time of placing of the concrete.

All posts shall be set vertically and to the required grade and alignment. Cutting of the tops of the posts will be allowed only with the approval of the Engineer and under the conditions specified by him.

Wire or fencing of the size and type required shall be firmly attached to the posts and braces in the manner indicated. All wire shall be stretched taut and shall be installed to the required elevations.

At each location where an electric transmission, distribution or secondary line crosses any of the types of fences covered by the specifications, grounding of the fencing will be accomplished in accordance with the following. A galvanized or copper coated steel ground rod 8 feet (2.44 m) long having a minimum diameter of 2-inch (12.7 mm) shall be installed directly below the point of crossing. The rod shall be driven vertically until the top is 6 inches (152 mm) below the ground surface. A No. 6 solid copper conductor or equivalent shall be used to connect each fence element to the grounding rod. The connections shall be either brazed or fastened with approved non-corrosive clamps.

When a powerline runs parallel or nearly parallel to and above the fence, the fence shall be grounded at each end or gate post or at intervals not to exceed 1,500 feet (457.2m).

When acceptable vertical penetration of the grounding rod cannot be obtained, an equivalent horizontal grounding system may be approved. Fence shall generally follow the contour of the ground, with the bottom of fence fabric no less than one inch nor more than six inches (152 mm) from the ground surface. Grading shall be performed where necessary to provide a neat appearance. Where abrupt changes in the ground profile in low areas make it impractical to maintain the specified ground clearance, longer posts may be used and multiple strands of barbed wire stretched thereon. The vertical clearance between strands of barbed wire shall be 6 inches (152 mm) or less. All posts shall be repaired in accordance with approved procedures after cutting or drilling.

Cattle guards and connecting fences and gates shall be assembled and placed as shown on the plans and in a work-manlike and substantial

manner.

Method of Measurement

607.04 Fence will be measured by the linear foot. Measurement will be along the top of the fence from outside to outside of end posts for each continuous run of fence.

Gates will be measured as complete units of the size and type specified.

Cattle guards will be measured as complete units and any necessary clearing and grubbing required will not be measured directly but will be considered as subsidiary work to pay items of the contract.

Basis of Payment

607.05 The accepted quantities of fence determined as provided above will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for fence and per each for cattle guards and gates of the types and sizes specified, complete in place.

Payment will be made under:

Joint fillers

Reinforcing steel
