eat; but of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, thou fhalt not eat of it: For in the Day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt furely die.

n And Adam gave Names to all Cattle, and to the Fowls of the Air, and to every Beast of the Field.

And they were both naked, the Man and his Wife, and were not afhamed.

The FALL of MAN.

P Now the Serpent having beguiled Eve through his Subtilty, fhe took of the Fruit of the Tree, of which God had faid unto the Man and the Woman, Ye thall not eat of it, neither fhall ye touch it, left ye die; and the did eat, and gave alfo unto her Husband with her, and he did eat.

And the Eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and there-fore they fewed Fig-leaves together, and made themfelves Aprons.

And when they heard the Voice of the Lord calling unto them, they were afraid, and hid themfelves from the Presence of the Lord God. And when the Lord afked them whether they had eaten of the Tree whereof he commanded then that they fhould not eat; the Man, to excufe himself, faid, The Woman whom thou gaveft to be with me, The gave me of the Tree, and I did eat; and

• Then the Lord God faid unto the Serpent, Because thou haft done this, thou art curfed above all Cattle, and above every Beaft_of_the Field: Upon thy Belly fhalt thou go, and Dust shalt thou eat all the Days of thy Life. And I will put Enmity between thee and the Woman, and between thy Seed and her Seed; it fhall bruise thy Head, and thou fhalt bruife his Heel.

Unto the Woman he faid, I will greatly multiply thy Sorrow and thy Conception; in Sorrow thou fhalt bring forth Children, and thy Defire shall be to thy Hufband, and he fhall rule over thee.

"And unto Adam he faid, Because thou haft hearkened unto the Voice of thy Wife, and haft eaten of the Tree of which I commanded. thee, faying, Thou shalt not eat of it; curfed is the Ground for thy Sake: In Sorrow fhalt thou eat of it all the Days of thy Life; Thorns alfo and Thiftles fhall it bring forth to thee; and in the Sweat of thy Face fhalt thou eat Bread, till thou return unto the Ground.

w Unto Adam also, and unto his Wife, did the Lord God make Coats of Skins, and clothed them.

* And the Lord God faid, Behold the Man is become as one of us, to know Good and Evil: And therefore left he fhould put forth his Hand, and take alfo of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live for ever, the Lord drove him out from the

Garden

Garden of Eden, to till the Ground from whence he was taken.

Y After this Adam knew his Wife; and he begat a Son in his own Likeness, after his Image. And after he had lived nine hundred and thirty Years, and begat Sons and Daughters, he died.

And it came to pass, when Men began to multiply upon the Face of the Earth, that the Earth was corrupt before God, and filled with Violence; and the Wickedness of Man was great, and every Imagination of the Thoughts of his Heart was only Evil continually. And thus it continued till the Flood came and destroyed them all; Noah only remaining alive, and they that were with him in the Ark, which God had commanded him to make; wherein few, that is, eight Souls, were faved by Water.

a After the Flood, when the Generations of the Sons of Noah were multiplied, the whole Earth was of one Language and of one Speech, till they attempted to build them a City and a Tower, whole Top might reach unto Heaven; and then the Lord confounded their Language, that they might not understand one another's Speech; and from thence did the Lord' fcatter them abroad upon the Face of all the Earth.

Since which Time the Lord weakened the Strength of Man, and fhortened his Days.

The PRESENT STATE of MAN by NATURE.

His MORTALITY.

It is appointed unto Men once to die.

a The Days of Man are determined; the Number of his Months are with the Lord: He hath appointed his Bounds, that he cannot pass.

The Duft fhall return to the Earth as it was; and the Spirit fhall return unto God who gave it.

f What Man is he that liveth and fhall not fee Death? And who fhall deliver his Soul from the Hand of the Grave? There is no Man that hath Power over the Spirit to retain the Spirit; neither hath he Power in the Day of Death; and there is no Difcharge in that War, neither thall Wickedness deliver thofe that are given to it.

The inward Thought of the Rich is, that their Houfes fhall continue for ever, and their Dwelling-places to all Generations; nevertheless Man being in Honour, abideth not.

A Wife Men likewife die, as well as the foolish and brutish Perfon: and they that truft in their Wealth, and boaft themselves in the Multitude of their Riches; none of them can by any means redeem the Soul of his Brother: nor give to God a Ranfom for himself, that he should still live for ever, and not fee Corruption..

No

i No Man is fure of Life; but they that are exalted for a little while, are taken out of the Way as all other, and cut off as the Tops of the Ears of Corn. Death fhall feed on them, and their Beauty fhall confume in the Grave.

* Man dieth and wasteth away; yea, Man giveth up the Ghoft, and where is he? He fhall return no more to his Houfe, neither fhall his Place know him any more. There is Hope of a Tree, if it be cut down, that it will fprout out again, and that the tender Branch thereof will not ceafe; but Man lieth down, and rifeth not till the Heavens be no more.

One Generation paffeth away, and another Generation cometh. And the Memory of them. that are dead is forgotten; alfo their Love, and their Hatred, and their Envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a Portion for ever, in any Thing that is done under the Sun.

Man goeth to his long Home, and the Mourners go about the Streets.

n

By one Man Sin entered into the World, and Death by Sin, and fo Death paffed upon all Men; For in Adam all die.
