Of all the avocations by which men obtain their livelihood there is not any requiring greater caution, and yet there is none in which so large a majority of those engaged are so negligent of their own real interests, as in that of the clerk in a Government office, the offices of public companies, merchants, solicitors, &c. This may in a great measure be attributed to the want of liberality and encouragement on the part of the employer; but it cannot be denied that, notwithstanding the mistaken mode of remunerating their services, there is, nevertheless, much in the power of clerks themselves; it is therefore intended to offer a few words of advice in the hope that some benefit may be derived by the numerous body of which the writer has, for
