CHAPTER I.

T being now the year of our Lord 1661, and (thanks be to Heaven!) peace re

stored throughout this unhappy land after so many years of frightful war and bloodshed, by the restoration of his most gracious Majesty Charles II., and finding entries in my diary during that sad and troublous time much effaced and blotted by the tears that often fell whilst my fingers held the pen, and wishing to retain a record of my sweet sister Ellinor, partly for my own solace, and partly for my daughter's sake (her little namesake, and a great likeness being traceable in her to my sweet sister), I purpose writing from this, my diary, a truthful account of what befell us during those terrible
