The scene of this unusually laughable book is laid in a small watering-place on one of the western lakes. "This is a book hot of philology, but of grammar. In other words, it treats language not in its physical aspect, as sound or syllable, but in its mental aspect, as discourse of thought. The aim is not scientific, but educational; not the mechanism of the mother tongue, but its mental action in practical use. We will accordingly begin with the parts of speech, which are functions of thought, and from these we will proceed to the structure of the language in composition of University of Oxford, author of " prose and verse."-Preface. Professor of Anglo-Saxon, English prose: its

elements, history, and usage.'

"The story of Bismarck's life is told here with fulness of detail and in a style that keeps the reader's interest, although it is plain from the outset that it is the account of a thorough-going partisan, and in general explains Prince Bismarck's life from Prince Bismarck's point of view, rather than from an impartial student's view of the movements of the latter half of the century.' But the feature of the book that will be most attentively regarded, and that is of really the greatest interest, is the copious illustration. modern idea of biography by illustration is carried out here to its fullest extent. Everything that pertains to Bismarck's life is pictured in all its relations. ."-New York Tribune.

[472

The scenes of this story vary between Janina, in Epirus, and Stamboul, and belong to the period of 1819. It involves a picture of the rottenness of the Turkish Empire, and the fatal power exercised by pashas in the distant parts, and by the Janissaries in the capital itself. Incidents of the Greek war of independence are introduced, and the Greek is painted the equal of the

Turk for cruelty and treachery. The tale is a curious blending of roses and blood, of the delights of the harem and of brutal butchery. The Lion of Janina is a Turkish pasha who, by mingling the characteristics of the fox and the lion, has accumulated political influence and enormous wealth.

A story of rural New England. Olive Newcombe, a girl in humble circumstances, marries Robert Nawn, who works in a shoe factory. Robert and his father live in a miserable, dilapidated old house, the father having the reputation of being rich, but is known to be very miserly. Olive becomes the drudge of the Nawn homestead, and between overwork and poor food loses her health and beauty and her husband's love. The downward course of the Nawns-that is, father and son-is painfully pictured. Their love of money leads to crime and breaks Olive's heart. The story is gloomy in the extreme, sordid and painful.

The famous woman's rights woman does not include in this volume the incidents of her public career as a leader in the reform movement known as "the emancipation of woman." It consists chiefly of extracts from her diary telling the story of her private life "as the wife of an earnest reformer, as an enthusiastic housekeeper, proud of her skill in every department of domestic economy, and as the mother of seven chil

dren." It will amuse and interest, however, for other reasons than these, through Mrs Stanton's remarkable

travel experiences and descriptions of the many noted people she met in her long life.
