in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. 38 Then certain of the scri'bes and of the Pharisees an'swered, sa'ying, Mas'ter, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he an'swered and said un'to them, An e'vil and adulterous genera'tion se'eketh af'ter a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jo'nas: 40 For as Jo'nas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the hea'rt of the earth. men of Nin'eve shall rise in judg'ment with this genera'tion, and shall condem'n it because they repented at the pre'aching of Jo'nas; and, behold, a grea'ter than Jo'nas is' here. 42 The que'en of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this genera'tion, and shall condem'n it for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to he'ar the wis'dom of Sol'omon; and, behold, a grea'ter than Solomon 'is' here. 43 When the uncle'an spir'it is gone out of a man, he wa'lketh through dry places, seeking rest, and fin'deth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return' in'to my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he fin'deth 'it' em'pty, swept, and ga'rnished. 45 Then go'eth he, and ta'keth with himself' seven oth'er spir'its more wick'ed than himself', and they en'ter in and dwell there: and the last 'state' of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also un'to this wick'ed genera'tion.

46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, 'his' moth'er and his breth'ren stood' without', desiring to speak with him. 47 Then one said un'to him, Behoʻld, thy moth'er and thy breth'ren stand without', desi 'ring to spe'ak with thee. 48 But he an'swered and said un'to him that to'ld him, Whọ is my mother? and who are my breth'ren? 49 And he stretched forth his hand to'ward his disci'ples, and said, Behold my moth'er and my breth'ren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven the same is my brother, and sis'ter, and mother.

CHAP. XIII.— The same day went Je'sus out of the house, and sat by the sea-side. 2 And grea't multitudes were gathered togeth'er un'to him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole mul'titude stood' on the shore. 3 And he spake man'y things un'to them in par'ables, sa'ying, Behold, a so'wer went forth to sow: And when he so'wed, some 'se'eds' fell by the way-side, and the fowls came and

devou'red them up: 5 Some fell upon' sto'ny pla'ces, where they had not much earth; and forthwith' they sprung up, because they had no de'epness of earth: 6 And when the sun was up, they were sco'rched; and, beca'use they had no root, they with'ered away. 7 And some fell amon'g tho'rns; and the tho'rns sprung up and cho'ked them. 8 But oth'er fell in'to good' ground, and bro'ught forth fruit, some an hun'dred-fold, some sixty-fold, some thirty-fold. 9 Who hath ears to he'ar, let him he'ar.

10 And the disci'ples came, and said un'to him, Why spe'akest thou un'to them in parables? 11 He an'swered and said un'to them, Because it is given un'to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abun'dance; but whosoev'er hath not, from him shall be ta'ken awa'y e'ven that he hath. 13 Ther'efore speak I to them in parables: beca'use they seeing, see not; and he'aring, they he'ar not; neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esa'ias, which saith, By he'aring ye shall he'ar, and shall not understand'; and se'eing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people's heart is waxed gro'ss, and 'their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have clo'sed; lest at an'y time they should see with their' eyes, and he'ar with their' e'ars, and should understand' with their heart, and should be converted, and I should he'al them. 16 But bles'sed 'are' your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say un'to you, That man'y prophets and right'eous 'men' have deṣi'red to see 'those things' which ye see, and have not se'en 'them; and to he'ar 'those things' which ye he'ar, and have not heard 'them.' 18 He'ar ye ther'efore the parable of the so'wer. When an'y one he'areth the word of the kingdom, and understan'deth 'it' not, then com'eth the wick'ed one,' and catch'eth awa'y that which was so'wn in his hea'rt. This is he which received se'ed by the way-side. 20 But he that received the se'ed in'to sto'ny pla'ces, the same is he that he'areth the word, and anon' with joy receiveth it: 21 Yet hath he not ro'ot in himself', but du'reth for a while; for when tribula'tion or persecution ari'seth beca'use of the word, by and by he is offen'ded. 22 He al'so that rece'ived se'ed amon'g the tho'rns is he that he'areth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of rich'es,

choke the word, and he becom'eth unfruitful. 23 But he that received se'ed in'to the good' ground is he that he'areth the word, and understan'deth 'it;' which also bea'reth fruit, and brin'geth fo'rth some an hun'dred-fold, some six'ty, some thir'ty.

24 Another parable put' he fo'rth un'to them, sa'ying, The kingdom of heaven is likened un'to a man which so'wed good' se'ed in his field; 25 But while men slept, his en'emy came and so'wed ta'res amon'g the whe'at, and went his way. 26 Bụt when the bla'de was sprung up, and brought fo'rth fruit, then appeared the ta'res also. 27 So the servants of the hous'eholder came and said un'to him, Sir, didst not thou sow good' se'ed in thy field? from whence then hath it ta'res? 28 He said un'to them, An en'emy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gath'er them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest, while ye gather up the ta'res, ye root up also the whe'at with them. 30 Let bo'th grow togeth'er un'til' the harvest : and in the time of ha'rvest I will say to the re'apers, Gath'er ye togeth'er first the ta'res, and bind them in bundles, to burn them: but gath'er the whe'at in'to my barn.

31 Another parable put' he fo'rth un'to them, sa'ying, The kin'gdom of heaven is like to a gra'in of mus'tard-se'ed, which a man took' and so'wed in his field: 32 Which inde'ed is the le'ast of a'll se'eds; but when it is gro'wn, it is the grea'test amon'g herbs, and becom'eth a tree, so that the birds of the a'ir come and lo'dge in the branch'es thereof'.

33 Another parable spake he un'to them; The kingdom of heaven is like un'to leaven, which a woman took' and hid in three measures of me'al, till the whole was leavened. 34 A'll these things spake Je'sus un'to the multitude in parables; and without' a par'able spake he not un'to them: 35 That it might be fulfill'ed which was spo'ken by the proph'et, sa'ying, I will o'pen my mouth in par'ables; I will ut'ter things which have been kept se'cret from the founda'tion of the world.

36 Then Jesus sent the multitude awa'y, and went in'to the house; and his disci'ples came un'to him, sa'ying, Decla're un'to us the parable of the ta'res of the field. 37 He an'swered and said unto them, He that so'weth the good' se'ed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good' se'ed are the children of the kingdom; but the ta'res are the children of the wick'ed 'one;' 39 The en'emy that so'wed them is the dev'il; the harvest is the end of the world; and the re'apers are the angels. 40 As therefore the ta'res are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

41 The Son of man shall send fo'rth his a'ngels, and they shall gath'er out of his kin'gdom a'll things that offend', and them which do iniq'uity, 42 And shall cast' them in'to a furnace of fire there shall be wa'jling and gnash'ing of te'eth. 43 Then shall the right'eous shine fo'rth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath e'ars to he'ar, let him he'ar.

44 Again', the kingdom of heaven is like un'to treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hi'deth, and for joy thereof' go'eth and sel'leth a'll that he hath, and buy'ẹth that field.

45 Again', the kingdom of heaven is like un'to a merchantman seeking goodly pearls: 46 Who, when he had found one pearl of grea't price, went and so'ld a'll that he had, and bo'ught it.

47 Again', the kingdom of heaven is like un'to a net that was cast' in'to the sea, and gathered of every kind: 48 Which, when it was full, they drew to sho're, and sat down, and gathered the good' in'to ves'sels, but cast' the bad awa'y. 49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the a'ngels shall come fo'rth, and sev'er the wicked from amon'g the just, 50 And shall cast' them in'to the furnace of fire: there shall be wa'iling and gnash'ing of teeth. 51 Je'sus saith un'to them, Have ye understood' a'll these things? They say un'to him, Yea, Lo'rd. 52 Then said he un'to them, Ther'efore ev'ery scri'be 'which is' instruc'ted un'to the kingdom of heaven is like un'to a man that is' an hous'eholder, which brin'geth fo'rth out of his treasure 'things' new and o'ld.

53 And it came to pass', 'that' when Je'sus had fin'ished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come in'to his own coun'try, he taught them in their syn'agogue, insomuch' that they were aston'ished, and said, Whence hath this 'man' this wis'dom, and these' mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son ? is not his moth'er called Ma'ry? and his breth'ren, Ja'mes, and Jo'ses, and Si'mon, and Ju'das? 56 And his sisters, are they not a'll with us? Whence then hath this 'man' a'll these things? 57 And they were offen'ded in him. But Je'ṣus said un'to them, A proph'et is not without' hon'our, save in his own coun'try, and in his own house. 58 And he did not man'y mi'ghty works there because of their unbelie'f. CHAP. XIV.1 At that time Her'od the te'trarch heard of the fa'me of Jesus, 2 And said un'to his servants, This is John the Bap'tist: he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew fo'rth themselves in him.

3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him' in prison for Hero'dias' sake, his broth'er Philip's wife. For John said un'to him, It is not la'wful for thee to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he fe'ared the multitude, because they coun'ted him as a proph'et. 6 But when Her'od's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Hero'dias danced befo're them, and ple'ased Herod. 7 Whereupon' he promised with an o'ath to give her whatsoev'er she would ask'. And she, be'ing befo're instructed of her moth'er, said, Give me here John Bap'tist's head in a cha'rger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless' for the o'ath's sake, and them that sat with him at me'ạt, he comman'ded 'it' to be given 'her.' 10 And he sent, and behead'ed John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the dam'ṣel: and she brought "it' to her mother. 12 And his disci'ples came, and took' up the body, and buried it, and went and to'ld Je'sus.

13 When Jesus heard of it,' he departed thence by ship in'to a des'ert place apa'rt: and when the pe'ople had heard 'thereof,' they followed him on foot out of the cities. 14 And Je'sus went fo'rth, and saw a grea't mul'titude, and was moved with compass'ion to'ward them, and he healed their sick. 15 And when it was e'vening, his disci'ples came to him, sa'ying, This is a des'ert place, and the time is now past'; send the multitude awa'y, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves vict'uals. 16 But Jesus said un'to them, They ne'ed not depa'rt; give ye them to eat. 17 And they say un'to him, We have here but five loaves, and two fish'es. 18 He said, Bring them hith'er to me. 19 And he comman'ded the mul'titude to sit down on the grass', and took' the five loaves, and the two fish'es, and, look'ing up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to 'his' disciples, and the disci'ples to the multitude. 20 And they did a'll eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve bas'kets full'. 21 And they that had eaten were about' five thou'sand men, besi'des wom'en and children.

22 And straightway Je'sus constrained his disci'ples to get in'to a ship, and to go befo're him un'to the oth'er side, while he sent the multitudes awa'y. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes awa'y, he went up in'to a moun'tain apart to pray and when the e'vening was come, he was there alo'ne. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the
