Misimproved-Duties towards the Aged.

Pr. 17: 17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born

for adversity.

Rom. 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Ph. 4:14 Ye have well done that ye did communicate with my affliction.

Heb. 13:3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

[See Poverty, 450, and Slavery, 570.]

7. Afflictions misimproved.

Pr. 27:22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

29:1 He that, being often reproved, hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Is. 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

9:13 For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.

Jer. 5:3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

Am. 4:6 And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. 7—11.

AGED PERSONS.

8. Duties towards the aged.

Lev. 19:32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the Lord.

1 Tim. 5:1 Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father, and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. 3 Honor widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have

children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

1 Pet. 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. [See 590.]

AMUSEMENTS.

9. What is said of mirth and amusements?

Job 21:11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. 12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. 13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. 14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

Pr. 14:13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

21:17 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

Ec. 2:1 I said in my heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure: and behold, this also is vanity. 2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

7:2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Mat. 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Lk. 6:25 Wo unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Wo unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

Employment of.

1 Cor. 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them: as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

2 Pet. 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day-time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you.

ANGELS.

10. How are good angels employed?

2 S. 24:16 The angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it.

2 K. 19:35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred four score and five thousand.

Ps. 18:10 And he rode upon a cherub and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.

34:7 The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Dan. 6:22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths.

7:10 Thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

9:21 Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.

Mat. 13:39 The harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little

ones: for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Lk. 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom.

Heb. 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

ANGELS APOSTATE.

11. Apostacy of angels.

2 Pet. 2:4 God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.

Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains, under darkness, unto the judgment of the great day. [See Depravity, 149.]

10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out. 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil.

Mk. 5:9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. Lk. 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain,

shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

Lk. 8:12 Those by the way-side, are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

11:15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils.

22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.

Jn. 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do: he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth; because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

13:2 And supper being ended, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him.) 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
