A WEEKLY RECORD OF EVANGELICAL THOUGHT AND WORK.

E commence a new series of The Christian Week
with a deepened conviction of the important
ends such a periodical serves. The main purpose
of our weekly is to record intelligence bearing

on the extension of the kingdom of our Blessed Lord and

Saviour Jesus Christ. We do not confine this leading

part of our programme to public events. The kingdom

of God cometh not with observation. The seed of the

kingdom is as the mustard seed. The conversion of one

soul is an event which causes joy in heaven. We have

often desired that a greater part of our journal should be

devoted to accounts of the way in which the Holy Spirit

leads individuals to Christ. There are many such

narratives, no doubt, in published biographies; but it

is important to let the world know that this glorious

work of Divine grace never ceases.

We believe nothing

is so fitted to awaken the consciences of the careless, and

to cheer the hearts of God's children, as the fact brought

home to them, that in the place and at the time in which

their lot is cast, there are those who are being turned

from darkness to light, from being heirs of wrath to

be heirs of glory. No communications will be more

acceptable for the pages of The Christian Week than sober

and authentic accounts of such cases; and we invite

confidential correspondence of this description, as well as

all news directly or indirectly concerning the cause of

Christ in the world.

We give the first place to this part of our plan, believing

that the simple proclamation of the terms and the success
of the Gospel will do more for the regeneration of the
world than any amount of controversy with the enemies,
or with the false or misguided friends, of Christianity.
At the same time, we believe it to be necessary to meet
the assailants of the truth of revelation at all points, and
therefore we have arranged for a series of papers on
Christian Apologetics, with reference to present needs, to
be treated in a popular and yet thorough manner by
competent writers.

We have no great partiality for stories, being of opinion

that there are too many of them in religious periodicals,

and often of a kind which do more harm by their sensa-

tionalism than good by the modicum of truth they con-

tain. Still, we recognise the usefulness of good religious

stories or parables as an attraction for those to whom the

same readiness of access cannot be obtained otherwise

and we are sure our readers will welcome them while

they are of such a character as that which we have the

pleasure of laying before them to-day from the pen of

A.L.O.E.

It is a great satisfaction to have a work in hand on
which one can confidently ask the blessing of God, and we
request our friends to aid us with their prayers, that
this periodical may be owned of God as a means of leading
souls to the Saviour and preparing the way of the Lord.

THE EVANGELICAL ALLIANCE MEETING IN EDINBURGH.

"Now are they many members, but one body."

T is easy at this date to adopt the first clause of this
sentence, for that there are many separate and dis-
tinct Christian Churches is evident to all. Their separate

existence, corporate capacity, zeal, and earnestness,
severally cause us to realise that they exist, and
that they are more or less vital and powerful. No
