We give the first place to this part of our plan, believing

that the simple proclamation of the terms and the success
of the Gospel will do more for the regeneration of the
world than any amount of controversy with the enemies,
or with the false or misguided friends, of Christianity.
At the same time, we believe it to be necessary to meet
the assailants of the truth of revelation at all points, and
therefore we have arranged for a series of papers on
Christian Apologetics, with reference to present needs, to
be treated in a popular and yet thorough manner by
competent writers.

We have no great partiality for stories, being of opinion

that there are too many of them in religious periodicals,

and often of a kind which do more harm by their sensa-

tionalism than good by the modicum of truth they con-

tain. Still, we recognise the usefulness of good religious

stories or parables as an attraction for those to whom the

same readiness of access cannot be obtained otherwise

and we are sure our readers will welcome them while

they are of such a character as that which we have the

pleasure of laying before them to-day from the pen of

which one can confidently ask the blessing of God, and we
request our friends to aid us with their prayers, that
this periodical may be owned of God as a means of leading
souls to the Saviour and preparing the way of the Lord.
