rite for the end instead of the beginning of christian blessings. As your children grow up, teach them to pray for God's continued grace to walk answerably to their christian calling, to follow the example of Christ, and to be made like unto him :" to die unto sin, and rise again unto righteousness, continually mortifying all their evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and and godliness of living." Do this in faith of God's help, and with a prayerful determination of training them up in the way they should go, and you may then reasonably expect those spiritual blessings promised to you and your children.

To enlarge upon the variety of sins and evil habits which require amendment among you would be to swell this address to a very undesirable length; but, in conclusion, I would earnestly and affectionately entreat you all in your several stations of life, to correct, by God's grace, those evil propensities, of which your own conscience accuses you, and prayerfully to watch against those temptations, and snares, and dangers to which your individual circumstances peculiarly expose you. Let us all resolve, in dependence upon God's promised aid, to follow the admonition of his prophet Jeremiah : "Therefore, now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God." May I, your lawfully appointed minister, be more watchful and zealous, and may you, the people intrusted to my spiritual superintendence, value more my services, public and private. May parents care more for the souls of their children, and children become more obedient and teachable. May young men and women subdue their vanity, their proud spirit of independence, and their impure thoughts and habits. May the sottish turn from his tippling; the careless from his indifference; the Sabbath breaker from his ungodliness; the sensual from his fleshly gratifications; the proud from his high imaginations; and may all, of every condition, be enabled to lay aside every weight, and the

sin which doth so easily beset him, and prayerfully to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith," for grace to resolve, and for strength to lead a new life, and to fulfil God's purposes in our creation, by living to his honour and glory here, and of praising him for ever hereafter.

Believe me, as ever,

Your affectionate friend and pastor,

HENRY DENNIS.

A Daily Prayer for the Revival of Converting and Sanctifying Grace.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we "know that thou art a gracious God, full of mercy, slow to anger, and of great kindness," and yet with all this conviction upon our minds, we are so insensible to thy undeserved goodness, as either to forget thee altogether, or to feel little thankfulness for what thou hast done, and art continually doing for us. It is our special mercy to live in a country where the light of thy blessed Gospel shines, and in a place where its saving truths are fully declared. Surely our hearts are indeed desperately wicked in lightly regarding such peculiar mercies, and neglecting so great salvation! Oh, how neglectful have we been in worshipping thee, O God, whether in public, or in private, or with our families! And when we have attempted to offer to thee our prayers and praises, how cold and lifeless have been our petitions! We have lived to ourselves more than unto thee, and have followed our own sinful indulgences and inclinations. We have sought our happiness in this world, and have not set our affections upon things above. We have loved other objects more than thee, and have served divers lusts and passions instead of thee. We have not glorified thee in our bodies and in our spirits, which are thine. We are verily guilty. Our own hearts condemn us. Our own consciences accuse us. Gracious God! do thou forgive us, and enable us for the future to walk worthy of our high calling in Christ Jesus. Enable us with deep humility to confess our vileness, and to seek in earnest for pardoning mercy through his blood and all-sufficient sacri

fice.

"Create in each of us a clean heart, and renew a right spirit in us." Oh, send forth among us a spirit of reformation. Revive thy work of grace in our souls that even we may be a people fearing thee and working righteousness. "Restore unto us the joy of thy salvation, and uphold us with thy free spirit." Though we deserve to lose thy favour and thy presence, yet grant us the comfort of thy help again, that we may return unto thee and obtain thy promised mercy. May we shun the persons, places, and pursuits, which have led us to transgress in times past. Oh, suffer us no longer to be deceived by lying vanities, but may we henceforth prayerfully resolve to attend to the things which belong unto our peace. Oh, quicken our forgetful souls and deadened affections to know more of thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent, that so we may have eternal life abiding in us. Renew our souls in knowledge, love, and godliness. May it be our daily study, our constant business, and the ruling desire of our souls to love, praise, and serve thee in heart, lip, and life. May we set out afresh in the great work of saving our souls, ever looking unto Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life, for grace to save, for power to help, and for love to make us holy, and happy, and useful to ourselves and all around us. Where thou hast begun a work of grace in any of our souls, oh, carry it on by thy power, and perfect it to thy glory. And those that are yet in their sins, oh, do thou convert, suffer them not to go on to destroy their never-dying souls. Awaken in us all a deep concern to know whether we are in Christ, and grant us to enjoy some precious evidence that we are interested in the salvation so richly provided in the gospel for penitent and believing sinners. Make us ever to see our folly, our ingratitude, and our shame, for not having loved thee more and served thee better. O thou that hast borne so long with us, and done so much for us, grant us pardon for the past and grace for the future to turn from all our sins; and from this very mo

ment to give up our hearts to be ruled, guided, and directed, entirely by thee. Pour down upon us, O our God, the spirit of fervent, humble, persevering prayer, that thy converting and sanctifying power may rest upon us and our families, our minister, and his flock, our Queen, our country, and our fellow sinners throughout the whole world. Hear us, O Lord, and answer us for Christ's sake. Amen.

FINIS.
