'Amicis PREFACE THIS collection of translations tells its own tale. By far the greater number of passages translated are from University and College Scholarship examination papers, and the versions here given have done duty as 'fair copies' in the ordinary course of school-work. I have to offer my warm thanks to Professor G. G. A. Murray of Glasgow University for his kindness in reading through these versions in proof, and for his scholarly criticism which has rendered them less imperfect than they would otherwise have been. I am also indebted to my friend and colleague Mr. C. H. Gibson for correcting the proofs and for many valuable suggestions. W. B. MERCHANT TAYLORS' SCHOOL, January 1st, 1895. |
