THE following observations were originally addressed to a gentleman, who had requested my opinion on several tracts written by the Rev. Dr. Hawker. I have thrown them into their present form and given them publicity, by the desire of persons to whose judgment I am accustomed to pay great deference.

The opponents of the system which is adopted and maintained by Dr. Hawker have chiefly insisted on its evil consequences; my endeavours have been to point out some of its defects only, conceiving such a method to be equally convincing, and less offensive to those whose system I most decidedly impugn, but for whose persons I entertain no feeling but what is involved in my most ardent desires for my own present and eternal welfare.

Birmingham, August, 12, 1824.
