There is transmitted herewith a report on the Ports of Hampton Roads, Virginia; this report is a revision of Port Series No. 15, which was last published in 1934. The present report was prepared by the Corps of Engineers, Department of the Army and the United States Maritime Commission as a result of the cooperation prescribed by Section 8 of the Merchant Marine Act, and in compliance with the terms of Section 500 of the Transportation Act of 1920. 2. In accordance with the agreement for cooperation between the two agencies, the report is presented in two parts, Part I of which was compiled by this office and Part II by the United States Maritime Commission. The information in Part I covers port and harbor conditions, fuel and supplies, port and harbor facilities, railroad services and rates, and detailed statistics of the water-borne commerce of the ports for a 5-year period. Part of the information for this report was supplied by the Norfolk District, Corps of Engineers, and the remaining data were secured by representatives of the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors, who made personal inspections of the facilities at the ports. 3. In view of the value of the assembled information to commerce and shipping it is recommended that the report be printed with the accompanying illustrations.
