General Record of British and Foreign Literature ; CONTAINING A COMPLETE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF ALL NEW WORKS PUBLISHED IN GREAT BRITAIN, THE publication of our last " Circular," it will have been seen, was delayed in consequence of the press of announcements. This, together with the care demanded for the proper working of the illustrated specimens, and the large number printed, will, it is hoped, satisfactorily account to those subscribers complaining of not receiving them in usual course. Few, if any, literary novelties remain from our "Christmas number" for special notice. Most of those announced by anticipation have made their appearance, and others are ready for immediate publication.—Sir F. B. Head's reminiscence of his French visit comes very opportunely. It consists of two handsome-looking volumes, described in the author's agreeable and original style as offering "a faggot of real French sticks, picked up in literary rambles, which, although thin, short, dry, sapless, crooked, headless, pointless, and of little intrinsic value, may, in the depth of winter, possibly enliven an English fireside."-Several very graphic descriptions of the scenes incident to the late coup d'état appear in original communications to the columns of the Times. Captain Jesse's letter, as that of an eye-witness, is valuable, and of thrilling interest. Perhaps no work on the first French Revolution (still fruitful in a portentous offspring) has been perused with feelings of deeper interest than the recent one containing the correspondence of Mirabeau with Count De la Marck; and now we are promised two more on the same subject,-one by De Barante, on the Convention; and another on the Directory, by Granier de Cassagnac,—both writers well qualified to produce standard works. Miss Bremer's records of her long visit to the United States will appear as "Homes of the New World." This distinguished writer has also just published in Sweden a work on the Great Exhibition. -Mr. Wilkie Collins's new Christmas book will be called "Mr. Wray's Cash-Box; or, the Mask and the Mystery."-The "Wide, Wide World, a Tale, edited by a Clergyman of the Church of England," will be ready on the 18th.-Miss Mitford's recollections of her life, or "Books, Places, and People," is nearly ready." Solwan; or, Waters of Comfort" is the characteristic title of a translation from the Arabic, promised by Mr. Bentley. English writers and artists have done justice, in every possible way, to the Great Exhibition, and foreign writers, as might be expected, are now recording the judgments and feelings of their respective nationalities upon the same subject. Besides Miss Bremer's work, above alluded to, there is M. Lorentz's "Examen descriptif et appréciatif des Produits de la France à l'Exposition Universelle de Londres en 1851, comparés aux Produits similaires des Nations étrangères," &c., in one volume, large 8vo.; and the list might be copiously extended by quoting from the announcements of every nation in Europe which sent its productions to London. Indeed, it would be a curious and useful catalogue for the world to possess, of all such works, both for the present and future times.—The last number of the Art-Journal contains an address from the Editor, Mr. S. C. Hall, claiming the honour of having originated the idea of "an Exhibition of Industrial Art in England." He states that it was early communicated to Mr. Cole and others, and reprints his original proposal, published in Jan. 1848. A detailed and learned History of Chloroform, as applied to destroy the sense of pain during surgical operations, has just been written by Dr. Marx, of Göttingen. It appears, from Dr. Marx's researches, that although Dr. Simpson, of Edinburgh, was the first in modern times to make known the marvellous properties of chloroform, traces of its agency and effects are to be found in the past history of science.-A bibliographical work relative to the life and works of Luther, specifying all the editions of the separate works, has just appeared at Halle, by E. G. Vogel, and is of great importance as throwing light on the history of our Protestant faith.-The Works of Vondel, the great national Dutch poet, have now for the first time been collected and illustrated with notes-both historical, and connected with the language-by the learned M. Van Lennep, of Amsterdam. The lovers of researches connected with the history of our own Anglo-Saxon tongue, and its cognate languages, will have a rich treat in the work now announced. The authorship of "A Child's History of England," appearing by chapters in Household Words, is acknowledged by Mr. Dickens, and the first volume is now published separately.-The "Life and Times of Dante" will be published this month, in two volumes, under the editorship of Mrs. Bunbury. -The increasing bulk and ledger-like appearance of the London Post-Office Directory appears to have induced the enterprise of a "Pocket Post-Office Directory," announced by Mr. Shoberl. For the information of such of our readers as are in the habit of consulting the Oxford Calendar, and lest they fall into mistakes in quoting from it, we may observe that in the present year an important change was introduced in the manner of arranging the class lists, in order to lessen the evil of the increasing bulk of the book. The "Booksellers' Almanack for 1852" is in every way suitable, and should be in the countinghouse of every bookseller, as, in addition to the usual information, it has an excellent coloured View of the Retreat, and a complete List of the Members of the Association and Office-Bearers.
