The Honorable Vic Fazio This is the Fortieth Anniversary of the creation of the Joint Economic Committee and our executive branch counterpart, the Council of Economic Advisers. The Employment Act of 1946 which created both entities was passed in response to great uncertainty about the future course of the American economy and the extent to which the end of World War II would bring an economic downturn and a return to the hard times of the thirties. The 40th anniversary comes at a time when dramatic economic changes also are creating uncertainties and I feel the Joint Economic Committee can be as relevant today in resolving those uncertainties and helping to chart the best strategies for economic growth as it was when it was created in 1946.
