Caution to Advertisers.-We beg to assure our advertising friends that the information given in the "Guide to Advertisers," respecting the circulation of "The Publishers' Circular," is altogether erroneous. The number there stated does not reach one-fifth of the average number sold. The Editor expresses his regret, stating it to be entirely a printer's error, and promises a correction in future editions.

169, Fleet Street: Feb. 2, 1852.

OUR "Annual Catalogue of Books published in Great Britain during 1851, with the Publishers' Names, Size, Price, and Month of Publication," is nearly ready: appended will appear a comprehensive List of Pamphlets. Orders for this Catalogue are requested, through London agents, during the present week.

MR. ARCHIBALD ALISON is preparing for publication "The History of Europe, from the Fall of Napoleon in 1825 to the re-establishment of Military Government in France in 1851."

UPON examination of the provisions of the last copyright agreement between France and England it will be seen that not only are reprints of English Copyright Works in France, but even the introduction of those from America, Holland, or any other country prohibited; this measure will materially affect the publishers of the United States, and will prove eventually, perchance, of service in obtaining a similar treaty with the American Government.

MESSRS. LONGMAN & Co. are issuing, in monthly parts, their "New Gazetteer of the British Empire," edited by Mr. Sharp.-The 7th volume of the new edition of Thirlwall's "Greece" has just been published." The Bleak House" is the title of Mr. Charles Dickens' new serial: the first number will appear at the end of the month.-The work on "Nicaragua and Central America," by C. G. Squier, the late American Chargé-d'Affaires, is published in this country by Messrs. Longman and Co., appearing in two volumes, with illustrations.-Mrs. C. L. Balfour has published her Sketches of English Literature," extending from the 14th to the 19th century.—

Controversial works on the doctrines of the Roman Catholic church have for some time been confined to lectures and pamphlets, serving every purpose but that of argument; we have, at length, two thick octavo volumes, by the Vicar of St. Helen's, Bishopsgate, promising a calm consideration and complete examination of all its articles of faith, under the title of "Protestantism and Romanism contrasted."

THE Rev. Erskine Neale's new book will be ready on the 5th instant, entitled "The Riches that bring no Sorrow."-Mr. Baines, of Leeds, has just published a "Life" of his father, in one vol. 8vo. -Mr. M'Culloch's recent treatise "On the Circumstances determining the Rate of Wages and the Condition of the Labouring Classes," demands consideration at the present crisis of affairs between the Engineers and their employers.-Mr. W. P. Urquhart has nearly ready for publication "A Memoir of the Life and Times of Francisco Sforza, Duke of Milan," in 2 vols.-The "Memoir of the late Emperor of China, and Accounts of the Court of Pekin," by the late lamented Dr. Gutzlaff, is published this day.-It appears, by an article in the "United Service Gazette," that the literary executor

selected by the Duke of Wellington, will prove to be the same upon whom Sir Robert Peel's choice devolved-Lord Mahon.

No announcement has yet been made by the publishers respecting the time that Mr. Macaulay's new volumes may be expected: the delay in their publication is stated to have arisen from fresh documents coming into the author's hands bearing upon the character of William III., the principal biographical subject of the forthcoming volumes. The 7th edition of Vols. 1 and 2 are now published; and their distinguished author has just had the honour conferred upon him, by the Royal Academy of Munich, of being appointed a member of that learned body.-Sir James Stephen has in the press a new "History of France," in 3 vols. 8vo.-Mr. M'Gregor has published the first two volumes of his "History of the British Empire, since the Accession of James the First," which bids fair to rival in extent and value the great History of Mr. Macaulay. Following the same track, Mr. M'Gregor prefaces his History with a record of the progress of England from the Saxon period to the end of the reign of Elizabeth: his second volume includes the Protectorate.

MR. MURRAY has added to his Series of Handbooks a very useful one, entitled "Official Handbook of Church and State."-"England and France under the House of Lancaster," is the title of a thick octavo volume, chiefly of interest from the introductory view it affords of the Early Reformation.Mr. Bohn supplies each of his valuable Series with a fresh volume this month, meeting the require ments of nearly every class of readers: to his "Scientific Library," Dr. Pye Smith's Geology and Scripture;"to the "Classical," Plato, Vol. 5;-to the "Antiquarian," Vol. 2 of Sir Thomas Brown's Works;-to the "Standard," Sir Joshua Reynolds' Discourses on Painting;-and to his "Illustrated Library," Allen's "Battles of the British Navy:" the edition of this latter work, enlivened as it is with good portraits, will prove a great favourite.

THE Bishop of Exeter avails himself of the article in the "Edinburgh Review," entitled "Bishop Philpotts," to address a pamphlet to Sir R. H. Inglis as Member for Oxford.-A pamphlet under the somewhat alarming, yet humorous title of "A History of the Sudden and Terrible Invasion of England by the French in May, 1852," appears this month.-"A Narrative of the present Kaffir War," is being published by Mr. Richardson, of Cornhill, in Quarterly Parts, edited by a Member of the Legislative Assembly.-Sir Charles Lyell's new edition of his "Manual of Geology," contains an additional chapter, which purchasers of the old edition will be glad to hear may be obtained separately. THE French correspondent of the "Literary Gazette" states that for some months past an extraordinary number of English Religious Tracts translated into French have been printed and circulated throughout the provinces, and that every week new translations are being brought out by the dozen at a time. Recent intelligence from Athens states that important discoveries have been made of valuable remains of sculpture, and of Greek inscriptions, which will excite in a high degree the curiosity of the learned, and of the world at large.

THE Germans possess what in their rich and expressive tongue they call an "Emigration-Journal,” which has been of immense service in conveying the most useful and necessary information to the numerous emigrants from their Fatherland to the distant regions that are enriched and benefited by so many industrious settlers. It is much to be desired, could our own Emigrants obtain a similar publication to inform them on points essential to their welfare and success before starting.

THE "Book of Familiar Quotations" is the title of a 12mo. volume just published by Whittaker and Co. It consists of a collection of quotations and aphorisms which are in daily use, arranged under the heads of the different authors in whose works the quotations are found, and seems calculated to supply a gap in literature.
