Mr. LAYARD'S "Second Visit to Assyria" will be published next week. 400 maps, plates, and woodcuts; and forms one handsome octavo volume. this work were sold last week at Mr. Murray's sale.

It is illustrated with About 4,500 copies of

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN.-Never, indeed, since the invention of printing has the marvellous power of the press been so strikingly shown as in the present instance. Through that most mighty, engine, a single mind, with almost electric speed, has sent a thrill through the minds of millions, and preached the Gospel of Christ to a congregation co-extensive with the Anglo-Saxon race; nay, we might say, co-extensive with the civilised world; for translation upon translation is carrying the work to nation upon nation, and ere long there will scarcely be a speech or language where the voice of this eloquent preacher is not heard.-Edinburgh Free Church Magazine, Dec.

Mr. Putnam of New York has announced an entirely original periodical, combining the lighter characteristics of a popular magazine with the higher and graver qualities of a quarterly review. The prospectus states that all articles admitted will be liberally paid for; and the writers who have promised their support and contributions comprehend nearly all the present race of literary men in America.

"Christmas Tide; its History, Festivals, and Carols." Under this title Mr. Sandys has brought together a vast fund of amusing and interesting lore; forming a volume that may find its way to the table not only of the antiquarian and learned pundit, but to a large number of those of less pretensions, but not less qualified to enjoy such an amusing book at the ensuing gatherings.

Mr. Thackeray's Lectures in New York appear to have made as great an impression upon the minds of his hearers as they did when delivered in London. It was announced to the crowded audience at the delivery of his third lecture that, in consequence of the very great demand for tickets beyond the ability of the manager to supply, arrangements had been made for a repetition of the whole series immediately.

We understand that a new edition of the works of that euridite divine, the Rev. Augustus Toplady, is nearly ready, in one volume, royal 8vo., and is to contain the sermon, "Jesus seen of Angels, Part II." as well as any other omissions in former editions.

A curious illustration of the extent of fame attached to the American author Mr. Hawthorne, is narrated in the "Athenæum" of last week:-"A Russian literary man of much taste and accomplishment has completed a translation into Russian of The House of the Seven Gables,' and pubfished it in the Muscovite Journal."

The Proprietors of the "Illustrated News" are just commencing the publication of a uniform and cheap edition of all our standard Historical Works.

Short Narrative of the Second Voyage of The Prince Albert' in the Polar Sea, in search of Sir John Franklin." By W. Kennedy, late Commanding the Expedition.-Just ready.
