HYPERION: A ROMANCE.

By H. W. LONGFELLOW.

Illustrated with upwards of SEVENTY ENGRAVINGS on Wood, From Drawings made by BIRKET FOSTER,

During a recent Tour through Germany, Switzerland, Salzburg, and the Tyrol, Undertaken for the express purpose of Illustrating this Work.

21s. cloth; 30s. morocco antique.

**This-the first Illustrated Edition of LONGFELLOW's celebrated Romance-comes before the public with some claim on its attention. Independently of the beauty of the Illustrations, it furnishes the first example of a lengthened Journey being expressly undertaken to depict from Nature all the varied Scenes amid which a writer of fiction has laid the incidents of his story. And when it is considered that a Tour of between two and three thousand miles—out and home-had to be performed for this purpose, and that every local Illustration contained in the volume was sketched on the Spot, and is a perfectly faithful representation of the place described or mentioned, the book cannot fail to be regarded with some little additional interest, if with no higher feelings of satisfaction.

The volume is bound in the same handsome style as the Illustrated Edition of LONGFELLOW's Poems, 8vo.

THE RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW.

UPWARDS of thirty years ago a Retrospective Review was established, which had, for some time, great Since it was discontinued, the want of a Publication of this kind has been much felt and often complained of, and these complaints partly have led to the present attempt. If, indeed, the passing literature of the day can furnish materials for so many Reviews as are now established, one surely may be dedicated to the vast field of the literature of the Past. It is our design to select from this field subjects which are most likely to interest modern readers; we shall lay before them, from time to time, Essays on various branches of the literature of former days, English or Foreign; we shall give accounts of rare

(941)

and curious Books; point out and bring forward beauties from forgotten writers; and tell the knowledge and the opinions of other days. It is, in fact, intended to comprise copious Critical Analyses of whatever Old Books seem to possess sufficient interest under any of these heads; (the works of Living Authors will be excluded). In addition to these, one Division of each Part, under the head Anecdota Literaria, will be devoted to the Printing (for the first time) of short pieces from unedited Manuscripts of different periods, preserved in the British Museum, the Bodleian, and other Public or Private Libraries; and another Division will be open to Correspondence on Literary Subjects. LIST OF CONTENTS OF NO. I.

1. Mrs. Behn's Dramatic Writings.-2. The Travels of Boullaye le Gouz.-3. Increase Mather's Remarkable Providences of the earlier days of American Colonization.-4. Eburne's "Plaine Pathway to Plantations;" on Population and Emigration at the beginning of the Seventeeth Century.-5. Bishop Berkeley on Tar-Water.-6. TBOOK for 1853: being a Handbook and Guide preceding 1.p. 2000 can be found, with means of

to the principal Rivers, Lakes, and Fisheries in Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland, and containing all the Information required by the Sportsman for the Year. By a PRACTICAL ANGLER, Author of many Papers on the Subject of Fisheries and Fishermen. 1s.-In a few days.

There is no sport in which a book for constant reference is so much wanted as Angling, as those already published are too large and expensive for general purposes, or not sufficiently comprehensive.

In addition to the matter to be found in Almanacs, it will contain a Notice in the Calendar of the day on which Fishing begins in the various rivers; the Laws of Angling and taking Fish abridged; brief Instructions for taking each kind of Fish in different Fisheries; Fly and Artificial Bait Making; Rod and Tackle making; Instructions to make an Outfit complete; Directions containing Lists of the principal | Fishing-houses; Lists of Rod and Line Makers, Winch Makers, &c.; Anecdotes of Angling and Anglers; Lists of the principal Rivers, Lakes, and Fisheries in the United Kingdom.

It is intended also to confine the Advertisements which will appear in it, as much as possible, to articles connected with the sport; and, therefore, preference will be given to Fishing-tackle Makers, and to those persons who have Fishing to Let, or who provide Accommodation to Anglers visiting neighbourhoods where Fishing is to be got, so as to give the greatest information in the smallest possible space.

N.B. The Almanac can be had bound with blank paper for Memoranda, with a tuck as a Pocket-book. 2s. 6d.

finding New and Full Moons from B.c. 2000 to A.D. 2000. By AUGUSTUS DE MORGAN, Professor of Mathematics in University College, London. Demy 8vo. oblong, 5s. cloth.

"This is quite a novelty in chronological literature. It is an universal almanac-universal, that is, as respects time, past, present, and future. The main object of it is, as the compiler states, to supply the place of an old alma. nac, which is never at hand when wanted; of the older almanac, which never was at hand; and of the universal almanac in every shape! A more useful chronological hand-book could scarcely be conceived. It will save an immensity of calculation, and is in many other respects invaluable as a chronological guide and instructor."
