ALL NEW WORKS PUBLISHED IN GREAT BRITAIN,

[blocks in formation]

ENGLAND is a Protestant country: she lives and flourishes on spiritual liberty, and sympathises profoundly with all other States and Kingdoms that, like her, love to protest against Papal despotism and darkness, and to promote free, and honest, and open discussion, without any threatenings or persecution to the souls or bodies of men. We therefore take a pleasure in recording the appearance of such works as the following:-"La France Protestante," par MM. Haag. This is announced as a literary, biographical, and bibliographical History of French Protestants, to be comprised in 4 vols. 8vo. Paris."La Liberté des Cultes," nouvelle édition, par M. Vinet.-Real, "Encyclopädie für protestantische Theologie und Kirche:" to be conducted by some of the most eminent theologians and scholars in Germany, among whom are enumerated-Drs. Gieseler, Tholuck, Lücke, Nitzsch, Umbreit, Twesten, &c. This work will consist of about 10 vols. 8vo.-It has long been impossible to obtain complete copies of Grimm's "Deutscher Grammatik," owing to Vols. I and 2 being out of print, of which volumes it was the author's intention to publish new and revised editions: owing, however, to his having been prevented doing this by the time and labour required for his great German Dictionary, he has been induced to publish mere reprints of the volumes mentioned, to meet the urgent demands of many purchasers of the other volumes.-The controversy raging in France respecting the (alleged) moral and religious evils attending the study of many of the classical writers of antiquity, will receive much elucidation from a German work by Dr. Herbst, entitled "Das classische Alterthum in der Gegenwart eine geschichtliche Betrachtung."-A French work, under the following title, has been recently condemned at Rome: "De la Papauté, Etudes Historiques de Philippe de Boni.""-"An Essay on the Politics of Edmund Burke" lately appeared in Holland, by Dr. Opzoomer, and has been translated into German.-A French work is announced as forthcoming, by M. Floquet, containing important discoveries respecting the Life and Writings of the great Bossuet.A valuable contribution towards the History of the Roman Empire during the first century after Christ, when the new doctrines were beginning to leaven the corrupted mass of the social system, is contained in Dr. Gregorovius's "History of the Emperor Hadrian," 8vo. Leipzig.

THE first part (containing Genesis) of "The Chronological Old Testament" will be published in January. One of its many interesting features will be a collation of the various readings in all the ancient versions in Walton's Polyglot Bible.

GEORGE CRUIKSHANK.-This talented and inimitable artist is now occupied preparing a series of Twenty-seven Designs for illustrating an edition of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," the first number of which is to appear on Saturday, the 23d inst.

THE PUBLIC LIBRARIES OF AMERICA.-Norton's "Literary Gazette," in its monthly pages, gives some interesting memoranda of the Public Literary Institutions of America. From it we learn that the New Astor Library" will not be opened before the Spring. The unavoidable delays will, says the Editor, eventually prove beneficial, giving additional time for the careful arrangement of the vast collections, the most complete of which is the department of Bibliography collected and presented to the Library by Dr. Cogswell.-To the New York Mercantile Library have been added more than 2000 volumes between Jan. aud July of the present year. It is furnished with 120 periodicals, beside newspapers and works of reference. There are more than four thousand paying members, and four or five hundred honorary members. Great efforts are being made to form or increase the various free libraries and literary institutions in the States. There appears to be a simultaneous movement upon this subject there as well as amongst ourselves.

A Walk through a House shown by Scenes in the Journey.
